Just finished watching Sanshiro Sugata, which was Kurosawa's directorial debut as a full feature length film. I enjoyed it. It's certainly not on the same level as his later work, but the promise of genius is there.
It is a bummer that around 18 minutes of footage was lost. While watching the movie, scenes that were lost are explained with on-screen text accompanied by the musical score. It would be nice to have the scenes intact, but what is in the presentation is still definitely worth checking out. I'll put on The Most Beautiful, next. |

What does everyone think of Bergmans "Sawdust and Tinsel"? I've never heard of it but found it while looking around on the B&N website. Was thinking about picking it up. Is it good?
Was also thinking about picking up "The Magic Flute" but not so sure.... Not sure if it's my type of movie.... What do people think of that too? As a side note, those are the only two bergman films I'm missing (of the ones released).... That's the main reason I was thinking of getting "The Magic Flute" Last edited by Yankees0222; 07-24-2010 at 02:39 AM. |

Just finished Il gattopardo. Picture quality, even by Criterion standarts is absolutely fantastic. Some recent high profile Holywood restorations look terrible comparing to this.
I understand that results greatly depend on the source, but I really wish that every restored classic looked that good on BR. |

Was your intention to buy an important, thought-provoking, amazing film and also a horrible waste of time? Interesting combo...

I love the Harry Potter books and films. So my original intention was to pick up my order of Harry Potter and the Order of the Phoenix. But I decided to take a quick browse through the Criterion section. To my surprise, I found The Man Who Fell to Earth. Decided to get both, since I love both and The Man Who Fell to Earth is OOP.

Two were created as wartime propaganda films, one was created as a sequel which he didn't want to do and the other one is a precursor to his jidaigeki films but was quite interesting because it plays out more like a comedy with its Noh elements. But you get to see how these films influence his work. Also, the films, the original negative source appears to have some damage especially "Sanshiro Sugata, Part Two" with the darkening. I'm not sure if this was due to the original film elements or because of World War II and Toho lacked resources which include lighting. I'm not sure. (I'm more inclined to pick up Donald Richie's book now because I'm curious about this) I really enjoyed "Sanshiro Sugata" but you are right, the 18 minutes would have been great. Similar to Metropolis of how intertitles were used for the missing footage but the footage is lost...maybe one day it will be found. "Sanshiro Sugata, Part Two" is quite interesting because it's more action-driven and because it was during wartime, Europeans are playing American sailors and contrasting the difference of how Japanese are from the first film when they watch a Japanese martial arts match versus the unruly Westerners screaming and cheering during a boxing match. I'll comment more once people pick it up and start to chime in on it. I'm assuming for those who own the AK100 25 - Films by Akira Kurosawa, the PQ is the same as the Eclipse Series release.
