I would love Images too.
Why is it never gonna happen?
Due to rights?

Images is a Criterion dream title of mine! Re: Quintet, there are no rights issues that I know of -- my reasoning is more just that absolutely everyone hates that movie, so a stand-alone release seems unlikely (and it'd be hard to shoehorn into a set à la A Safe Place).

"Quintet" is one of the most bizarre films I've ever seen. It's nothing if not fascinating. The first time I watched it, I had no idea what to make of it. It's pretty amazing that Altman had "Quintet", "Health and "Popeye" right in a row. All three were just huge bombs, although "Popeye" is great IMO. I think he mixed in "A Perfect Couple" somewhere in that 79-80 time period as well. "Health" is the only Altman film I haven't seen because it's completely unavailable on home video. I think the studio sabotaged that film on purpose if I remember correctly and made it basically impossible to see.

A dream Altman box set for me would be "McCabe", "California Split", "Images", "A Wedding", with upgrades to "Secret Honor" and "Short Cuts". One of Altman's most underrated films, "Streamers", is with Shout Factory. I'd love to see them upgrade that to BD.

Managed to sneak in Night and the City this morning. Lovely presentation of a terrific film.

Great character names--Fergus Chilk in particular. Seems like something out of a Coen Brothers movie.

My dream set would be one consisting of Altman's non comedic/ensemble movies, which is what he is known for but personally I'm not a huge fan of:

McCabe & Mrs. Miller
Images
3 Women
Quintet
Secret Honor

And you're right about Quintet being bizarre. I felt just like that when I first watched it, it was so unlike anything else my brain couldn't even digest it. It's even more bizarre than Zardoz. But I love it. I watch my DVD once every couple of months.

Images on the other hand, I have no idea why this movie isn't more popular. It's one of the best psychological thrillers I've ever seen, with some elements of horror. It had a couple of moments that make you jump out of your seat. I love the setting of the movie, the isolated house in the idyllic green countryside (filmed in Ireland), it's so hauntingly beautiful.

Images is an UA movie, but there might be some rights issues hovering around these Altman movies. Many of his DVDs have been OOP for a long time. I had to pay a pretty penny for the DVD of Images. The blu ray release of The Player is OOP as well, I had to get the German blu ray. So I don't know what the deal is entirely.

Yeah, a bunch of Altman DVDs have gone OOP. I think I found "Images" used on Amazon a year or two ago for about $18, but I noticed it's skyrocketed in price. I think I paid about $20 for "Quintet" used. And I picked up "California Split" before it went OOP, but it goes for a pretty penny now. I think "A Perfect Couple" is OOP now, but I got that one pretty cheap.

"3 Women" is fantastic, but I didn't include that because it already has a great standalone release. But it's one of my favorite films of all-time. "Images" is amazing. Susannah York is mesmerizing in that film. Another Altman film I love is "Kansas City". Jennifer Jason Leigh is so great in that. That would be one I would love to see get a Criterion release. A lot of male directors struggle to consistently get the most out of actresses, but a lot of the most memorable performances in Altman films were by women, which can't be said of many male directors.

Bought a few Criterion lots on eBay this week. I'm keeping the titles I need and selling my duplicates.
Really looking forward to seeing Le Samourai and Sid and Nancy. Hopefully, I'll be upgrading Le Samourai soon.

The word is the Wim Wenders Foundation via social media is telling people to not import the French blu-rays because Criterion will be releasing the Wenders films.

Confirming the obvious.

The Bergman notes are selling on eBay for about $38 shipped, which isn't too bad, I suppose.

Yeah, because us French have so many exclusive Wenders Blu Rays.
Basically, it only concerns Until the end of the World.

That Bergman money shows The Seventh Seal in the background. I can't think of a better film to represent his career than that one.

After spending a few days watching all the available Bruce Beresford films in the Criterion Collection (Breaker Morant and Mister Johnson), I watched a surprisingly good film called The Black Stallion last night. At first I couldn't believe this was a children's film, because it didn't "feel" that way...but what an extraordinary surprise to say the least. I thoroughly was engaged in the first half of the movie and really enjoyed watching it. Tonight I will spend 3 hours watching all the supplements including Carroll Ballard's short films (that total almost 2 hours combined).

I was also enthralled to see Francis Ford Coppola having produced The Black Stallion, and seeing his Zoetrope name on there. I am now officially a fan of Carroll Ballard and his films.

Reading more about Mr. Ballard I noticed his films deal with man and his relationship to nature. They are also poetic.

Can I safely say Terrence Malick and Carroll Ballard have a lot in common ? YES!

FYI Amoeba is having an online 25% off used blu-ray sale. Their used Criterions are overpriced at $20 or more, but for those of you outside California who won't have to pay tax, $15 after the discount isn't too bad. Free shipping in the US. http://www.amoeba.com/

Edit: Through Sunday. They have a pretty big used Criterion selection. Code=MOVIES25

I was in the mood for a couple of light films the last two nights. I watched Scanners and Eating Raoul and had fun seeing both. Raoul was so ridiculous that I loved it.

I watched The Brood earlier this week and want to finish my Cronenberg binge with The Fly sometime this weekend. Quite a vivid imagination this guy has...

I too am on a Cronenberg run at the moment, as part of Shocktober. I watched The Fly last night and I'm planning on Scanners tonight. It peaks with The Brood tomorrow night, before I take in his performance in Nightbreed on Sunday which will then segue nicely in to the Hellraiser movies.

Eating Raoul seems really undervalued here, so I'm glad to see another fan of the film! I find it extremely entertaining and hilarious.
