I thought it was when you're moved by it and it feels real and you can connect to the characters.

I really didn't like Mulholland Dr.
Extremely disappointing movie for me.
I'm probably going to sell my Criterion blu of it, even.

For me Mulholland Dr. was much more enjoyable on a second viewing and now a film I consider a masterpiece. Maybe give it another try in the near future.

I want to. It's just a passing thought to sell off the blu, but that's how damn disappointed I am after watching it... honestly I feel emotionally drained and just want to rid myself of it, or get it away. I should stick it in a cupboard and try and forget about it, haha...

I have a feeling I'll warm up to it after a while when I've formulated my own thoughts on the narrative, and give it a second viewing.

I haven't seen it in years but I don't remember it making much of an impression. I've had the German Lynch set sitting around for a while but haven't really had mood and opportunity intersect just yet.

I want to add that there's a lot I liked about the movie.
I went into it not realizing how even more disjointed and 'open-to'interpretation' narrative structure this movie would have.
I liked Eraserhead, but I started getting so into the two girls' characters, that I felt cheated and bad when Lynch decided to end their story arcs so abruptly, and so... unfinished.

I get that this is his style, and I should have been expecting it, but it still caught me majorly off guard. And like I said, the narrative really got to me, I'm still trying to figure out stuff and figure out what exactly happened myself... I think until I do that I can't appreciate what I just watched.

Oh and I want to say, the sound design is excellent.. I felt genuinely uncomfortable during the most harmless and mundane of scenes watching this. I hope they play this one and Eraserhead (at midnight, of course!) at a local theater sometime next year. I'll make it a top priority for me.

I was reading a very good article about breaking down the film by a so called Film Crit Hulk:

http://birthmoviesdeath.com/2012/03/...lholland-drive

But decided to stop and finish it until I rewatch it, maybe it is of some help, the parts I read where good, only problem is all in capital letters for some reason, also it is a pretty long read.

Now THIS is a controversial statement.

...have you ever seen a David Lynch film before?

They tend to be kind of weird.

As I've said I've seen Eraserhead.
But it was much easier for me to come to terms with the unconventional narrative of THAT movie...

Yeah this is where you and I are just going to have to politely agree to disagree.

I don't know if Irreversible is a great movie or not.

But that particular scene is shockingly well done as far as the realistic depiction of
[Show spoiler]rape and all its brutality.

No cuts, no editing of any kind...just one long ten minute take.

Monica Bellucci appears as though she's actually experiencing what's being done to her.

...I'm not exactly sure how much more they could've done to realistically convey the horror of such an event.

I go back and forth on whether or not it needed to be as graphic as it was. On one hand, it does seem like the director was going for gratuitous shock value. On the other hand, if you're going to depict a
[Show spoiler]rape in a movie
then why not depict it for the brutal nightmare that it really is.

No stylization of any kind.

Is that the movie where the girl gets raped from behind by this guy in a dimly lit alleyway?

That's interesting.

I don't love every David Lynch movie, so I understand where you're coming from.

...I just think Mulholland Drive is a work of pure genius.

haha, well I guess by now Irreversible is pretty well known as the
[Show spoiler]shocking raping scene
movie, or the
[Show spoiler]smashed face by extinguisher
movie, not sure if we need to keep using spoilers tag.

I can never seem to predict when someone's going to get upset about the lack of spoiler tags.

I mean does anyone not know that Rosebud was the
[Show spoiler]sled?

...but I try be respectful.

...though I don't always succeed.

For me what was just as shocking as the rape was the shadow of a person walking past, stopping, to then carry on walking.

I've seen Mulholland Drive once, when hit first hit home video. Did not care for it at all. Equally, I found Eraserhead,The Elephant Man, and Dune all a real slog to get through. Seeing only these four films hardly qualifies one as a Lynch expert, but they are no doubt indicative of his style.

To me, his genius is evident in Twin Peaks - but that may be because it was a co-creation. But with Mulholland Drive being trumpeted by most around these parts, it is tempting to give it another go - maybe during the B&N sale.

Two takes, actually. They move and the camera cuts to an opposite angle about 3/4 of the way through. I saw it a couple of weeks ago for the first time.

I didn't like it, but I didn't think the infamous scene was "that bad". Noe clearly attempts to manipulate the emotions of the audience and pulls no punches (pardon the pun) to achieve what he wants. The problem is that he's so obvious about it that it takes me right out of the suspension of disbelief and I become very aware that it's a movie I'm watching and aware of what it is I'm supposed to be feeling. I also didn't like the "precognition"/destiny element of the story, that seemed needless and in some respect relieves the characters of responsibility for their actions (and reactions). This in a movie where the actions are so drastic and with such horrific consequences all around.
