I went back and did a quick look at my actual percentage of categories owned. Turns out Horror was the largest at 10.8% and my next highest percentage of my "strongly over-represented" categories was Foreign at 3.6%. So I'm assuming that representation depends on the amount of films that are available in any particular category.

And though I definitely didn't appreciate melodrama in the past, silent film taught me to see as a technique, so I can enjoy it now. (And then there's Almodovar...). I'm surprised that animation and sci-fi aren't higher, but I might see those in the theater more than buy them. What does surprise me is that Criterion is a whopping 31% of my collection while Kino is only 7.5%. Kino is putting out a lot of good stuff now; I have a list and am saving my pennies for a good BF deal on 'em. |

Strongly overrepresented: Dark humor, Film-Noir, Foreign, Imaginary, Period, Psychological thriller, Surreal, War, Western
Overrepresented: Biography, Coming of age, Drama, Heist, History, Melodrama, Mystery, Romance Underrepresented: Action, Documentary, Erotic, Horror, Nature, Teen Strongly underrepresented: Animation, Anime, Comic book, Family, Holiday, Martial arts, Music, Musical, Other, Sci-Fi My top genres were drama at 19.1%, comedy at 7.1%, and crime at 6.8%. My studios were Warner at 25.2%, Criterion at 20.9%, and Universal at 9.2%. According to my statistics, I'm more than likely cynical and manic-depressive. On another note, I've grabbed a nice little haul from the sale so far. Today, I picked up Ace in the Hole and The Gold Rush. Last week I got on a bit of a Sjöström kick and picked up The Phantom Carriage and Wild Strawberries. I thought his performances were great in both, but he blew me away in The Phantom Carriage. I've never had a silent film move me the way it did, especially [Show spoiler] I was looking to grab one more individual film when I pick up the Apu trilogy this weekend, but I can't make up my mind. Anyone want to help me narrow down my list? The River Monsieur Verdoux Odd Man Out Ikiru Harakiri The Four Feathers The Magician ...and by the way, you can get the Apu trilogy for $35 or Kieslowski's Three Colors trilogy for $28 this weekend with the 30% off non-member email coupon. Strongly overrepresented: Film-Noir, Foreign, Musical, Short, War, Western
Overrepresented: Drama, Heist, History, Romance, Surreal Underrepresented: Music, Teen Strongly underrepresented: Anime, Comic book, Martial arts, Other Looking at the following statistics, 75% of my collection is prior to 1990, and 56% is from the years 1940-1979. ![]() Criterions make up 16% of my collection, followed by Warner Brothers, Kino Lorber, Twilight Time, and Olive. One thing I noticed is the martial arts category is pretty inconsistent. It seems to be a catch-all for Japanese samurai flicks, kung-fu, chop-socky, wuxia, etc, but not all samurai films are listed in the category. Include them all and I would no longer be strongly underrepresented. Last edited by oildude; 11-25-2015 at 07:23 AM. |

I had this as part of the final 3 that my indecisive a** narrowed my "maybe" pile down to today. It was between it, The River, and Ace in the Hole. I will probably end up grabbing it regardless of what else I end up buying this sale lol.

Both of those were in my final "maybe" stack. Meh, what the hell, I'm going all out this sale. |

I'm perplexed this evening. I'm trying to figure out what films I want to order before the end of the B&N sale. Doing so while maintaining some semblance of a budget is exceedingly difficult. I'd like to keep it to four or five more films.
I want to explore more Kurosawa, and Ikiru looks like a film I could truly love. If I don't order it this month, I'll be buying it in December. I'd appreciate some suggestions for my initial foray into Yasujiro Ozu's canon. An Autumn Afternoon intrigues me, but I'm open to input from the puppet theater. Thanks, guys. I'm going to start Kieślowski's Three Colors trilogy now, and decided if I use that 30% off coupon on it, or the collection of three films Roberto Rossellini did with Ingrid Bergman. I watched Stromboli three nights ago, and was surprisingly moved by it. |
