question for everyone - are the three films in the Samurai Trilogy 'great' films in the sense that a film like Harakiri is? or are they more aptly described as just 'fun' like I am assuming the Zatoichi films are?

I LOVED Kwaidan and Harakiri. Should I just stick to Kobayashi?

Along with the two mentioned above, Yojimbo is the only other samurai movie I've seen. I found things to admire about it, but kind of saw it more so as a film to strictly entertain. Needless to say, I still need to see Seven Samurai.

Well, I haven't seen Harakiri so can't compare.

But if Seven Samurai isn't a great film, then I don't know what is, frankly.

I thought The Samurai Trilogy was just alright. They're beautifully shot and interesting as a whole, but they don't stand up to the best of the best samurai films like Harakiri and Seven Samurai.

You should check out Samurai Rebellion.

It might be as good as Harakiri.

I love the Samurai Trilogy. It doesn't rise up to Harakiri, but few movies do. You should definitely get Seven Samurai. Also a few other Criterions like The Hidden Fortress, Sword of Doom and Throne of Blood are other great films IMO if you've never seen them.. Though not a Samurai film Rashomon is another.

As far as ghost tales like Kwaiden, Kurenoko is pretty good, but IMO pales in comparison with Onibaba. Both sharing similarities.

I watched Inherent Vice for the first time last night.

I don't know whether I love it or hate it.

I know that I haven't been as utterly baffled by a movie plot since The Big Sleep.

...PTA threw me a curve ball on this one.

Catbus on a movie shelf next to the tv, small Totoro on the shelf with all the Ghibli films in the dining room, Totoro Kleenex dispenser in the bathroom, and a 3 foot tall Totoro in the spare bedroom.

When I type it all out it makes it sound like I live in a Japanese treehouse...

I'll be buying anything that is released by him on Blu-ray. I haven't seen it yet, but most definitely Samurai Rebellion, The Human Condition, etc.

I'm considering picking up his Eclipse set. I don't expect much from movies in the Eclipse sets, so it is easy to put them on late in the evening. Low expectations often make for the most fun viewing experiences.

I've watched it twice and it made no more sense the second time. I think it's meant to simulate the drug-induced haze that Joaquin Phoenix's character is in. I found it a bit like a David Lynch film ("Lost Highway" and "Mulholland Drive" in particular) in that you have to abandon following the plot in any logical way to enjoy it.

Edit: I've watched I Will Buy You and Black River so far and enjoyed them both. I'm also kind of a "never met a Japanese film he didn't like" kinda guy though.
