Ray Jackson, for example, may have the worst avatar on Blu-ray.com, but he seems pretty sharp and smart about movies - at least from what I've read here and there in this thread.
It was, I thought, pretty clear that I was jokingly being over the top to make a point.

Ray, the smartest person on bluray.com, not liking a movie still doesn't automatically make it unsucessful.

OK, Let's all calm down.

I'm a Scorsese fan - I ranked him number 2 on my list of greatest living directors just now! :P

I agree he has probably made more "great" films in his whole career that PTA has so far BUT, he has made more stinkers than PTA has too (Again - That's none in my opinion. Seems to be one in yours)

So you're giving him the award because he was born first.

Also, I think you are underestimating his output - 7 movies and a documentary (not counting all his shorts) is a movie every 2 and a bit years.

Currently living director?

If only Malick ended his career with The Tree of Life , I am still eager to watch Knight of Cups

BTW I checked and at least critically according to Rotten Tomatoes, it could be said that almost all Scorcese and PTA output has been a success.

PTA doesn't have anything lower than 70%

and the only Scorsese films lower are: Boxcar Bertha, New York, New York and Shutter Island (I am sure Polaroid would beg to differ on this one ), which is a pretty small percentage considering his twenty something films.

But it is meant to be. I mean, you're not meant to think it is realism.

I like Ebert's take on it:

Quote:
And all leads to the remarkable, famous, sequence near the film's end when it rains frogs. Yes. Countless frogs, still alive, all over Los Angeles, falling from the sky. That this device has sometimes been joked about puzzles me. I find it a way to elevate the whole story into a larger realm of inexplicable but real behavior. We need something beyond the human to add another dimension. Frogs have rained from the sky eight times this century, but never mind the facts. Attend instead to Exodus 8:2, which is cited on a placard in the film: "And if thou refuse to let them go, behold, I will smite your whole territory with frogs." Let who go? In this case, I believe, it refers not to people, but to fears, shames, sins.
Ray - Is the real problem here that it is Tom Cruise's best performance, and not Top Gun?

Listen Grug, you backed me into a corner like a wild animal and I done what I had to do to survive.

...I done what I had to do.

I love PTA.

And damn you for forcing me to say anything even remotely negative about him.

Damn you for that.

Have you seen Magnolia lately? Maybe give it a revist?

I know many might not take him seriously but what about James Cameron , if only he hadn't done Piranha Part II, and something tells me the Avatar sequels might not live up to the original.

There is also Woody Allen, if anything only because he has made like double what Scorsese in the same amount of time .

The problem is I haven't seen many directors entire filmography, and the ones I have seen there are always some movies I don't like.

Here is a list I found:

Don't make this personal bro.

I recommend we both just calm down and take a moment to think about this.

...before we both say something we regret.

Malick is in my top five.

But his output hurts his case for greatest living imo.

Plus I feel as though his films are starting to become a little redundant in terms of tone and style.

No one loves his use of abstract, poetic voice over more than I do.

...but it's time to go in another direction.

I could never get in to Cameron. I think Aliens is his only great film. (I have never seen The Abyss - I've never been lead to believe that was great though?)

I can't stand Woody Allen. He has made a few undeniably great films, for sure, but on the whole, I get very little out of his work. Also, most of his films feel like versions of the same film to me.

I agree with Ray. Magnolia is pretty much nonsense. Having said that, I absolutely love The Master and consider it one of the top films of the new millenium.

Wenders I am very lacking in. I have seen only two of his films (one of them was last night, coincidentally!) Paris, Texas and The American Friend. I really enjoyed both, so this is an avenue for me to explore for sure.

Costa = Pedro Costa? I've seen none of his work.

Oh, The Coen Bros would make my list too. Even their worst films are interesting, and thier best are incredible.

Our opinions will differ greatly then! I could go on making a list of living directors whose filmography is "greater" or "better" than PTA, and I love PTA. And to think, Altman didn't pass away all that long ago!
