Nicolas Roeg
Jim Jarmusch
Michael Haneke
Wong Kar Wai
Hirokazu Koreeda
Aki Kaurismaki
Roman Polanski

I could keep going...actually, the list is pretty long. Many of the greats alive today, like their deceased predecessors, are multi-talented, some also being great writers, actors, or cinematographers. My favorite directors are almost all gone, but I think there is still a lot of talent alive today.

Hell, I think Clint Eastwood is one of the greatest living directors.
This is a great list with a lot of people I agree with.

Aki Kaurismaki is another of those directors who I need to explore more deeply as I've really loved what I've seen.

Francis Ford Coppola had an amazing high, but it was short lived and the lows seem awful low.

Went back and added Milos Forman. Couldn't remember how to spell is name and had to look him up (actually, he has a mark above the "s" to make it pronounced like an "sh" but I am too lazy to figure out how to post that here).

He has a lot of films MIA on Blu-ray in the U.S. Ragtime is one of my most wanted on Blu-ray. It would make an excellent Criterion release.

I disagree but I love Godartsy Farsty. That was a stroke of cleverness.
Thanks! I just made it up on the spot... maybe I'll create a new blog called that if it hasn't been taken yet... I'll devote the rest of my life to mocking Godartsy fartsy and gain a legion of fans and allies!

Ragtime would definitely make a great CC release, and I hope they put out their blu Ray version of Closely Observed Trains. He is a filmmaker whose work should be seen by a wide audience.

Don't do that.

If you're ever making another forum username though, that is a shoe-in.

I want to add Jane Campion to a list of greatest living directors, but I have only seen two of her films and don't know much about her output. But those two films...wow! Really love them. I will say she is by far my favorite female director working today.

Yep. Need to watch An Angel at My Table one of these days. I really need to dig into her body of work. I think she is an immense talent.

An Angel At My Table is a great film by her, and a CC title as well.

I've only seen 3 of her films... Holy Smoke is the other one, which I liked. Harvey Keitel is in that one too and I love that actor.

I consider The Piano possibly one of the greatest films ever made actually. It's a movie with one of the greatest scores (Michael Nyman) and most majestic cinematography (Stuart Dryburgh). I'd love this film to be in the Criterion Collection, I must say. It's almost the female version of Terrence Malick, but in some ways even better, with her woman's touch and elegance. It's so haunting, soooo haunting.

No. Beauty and the Beast has never been OOP from Criterion since it was released on LD in 1991.

Four of Jacques Tati's films had gone OOP, but brought back for the Complete Tati box set. But that was due to StudioCanal being strong-armed by the Tati estate.

TOP FIVE GODARD FILMS EVERYONE?
I'm currently on a personal quest to obtain a reasonably-priced copy of Pierrot Le Fou.

I hesitated on buying a $60 copy someone was selling here a couple of weeks ago and one of you heartless pigs snatched it up while I was vacillating.

When I find out who it was I will have my vengeance.

...in this life or the next.

No. You might be mixing them up with the three Hitch titles that went OOP and never came back into print: Rebecca, Notorious, and Spellbound.
