The American Friend is described as a neo-noir in reviews. This info was good enough for me to pull the trigger

Great choice. Would like to see your thoughts after viewing this one. I recommend Ripley's Game (DVD) which is a fairly close remake of The American Friend. Both imo are solid neo-noir.

Okay, assuming the stars align and we get announcements today (the 15th), my updated wish list is:

New Spines:
  • Angels in America
  • Ball of Fire
  • Un borghese piccolo piccolo (An Average Little Man)
  • Captain EO
  • Cat on a Hot Tin Roof
  • Evita
  • Forget Me Not
  • 45 Years
  • Hedwig and the Angry Inch
  • Madonna: Blond Ambition Tour
  • Mildred Pierce
  • Mommie Dearest - although there are relevant phantom pages, turns out they're old so this is a maybe. Good catch, CriterionBlues!
  • Ordinary People
  • A Place in the Sun
  • Pink Flamingos
  • Repeat Performance
  • Simon Killer
  • Suddenly, Last Summer
  • A Summer Place
  • The Tenant
  • Two Women
  • The Woman in Question

DVD -> Blu-ray Upgrades:
  • The Lady Eve
  • Mala Noche
  • Summertime
  • I vitelloni
  • Written on the Wind

Default Umberto D.

I watched Umberto D. for the first time a couple of nights ago. I thought it was very good. Not too deep (... like in the shallow end of the Criterion pool). I don't want to throw out any spoilers, but the ending surprised me. It's another Criterion blind buy that I don't regret buying.

I'm infinitely more confident that Point Break will be announced as a Criterion release than for the announcements to be made today.
My guess is Tuesday, January 19th at 5:35 pm CST.

On 12/8/15 I pre-ordered all available titles using the 20% off sale. As titles are released they hold until I have over $50 of merchandise and then they ship free.

I was worried they would hold everything until the end of February, but they have the shipment scheduled and shown in my Orders section under My Account. I was very pleased with the way this went down and emailed them encouraging them to do this again.

In fact, I would love to see a Criterion Collection Club where you are automatically billed for all new titles with an additional 20-25% off. I would rather pay $27/title and have them immediately than wait several months for the B&N sale or a flash sale. I'm also subscribed to the Easton Press 100 Greatest Books "club" and get a book each month. Makes it easy to spend money with a quality company.

On laserdisc... I don't think the film would qualify for a re-release anymore than
Supercop would.

Oh, Evita doesn't and Jellyfish Eyes is qualified then?
Despite what hate you have towards Madonna, I think EVITA is much better than a dozen Criterion Bluray releases at least!

Evita is the ultimate musical epic! Adore that movie.

I know the Blond Ambition Tour is waaaaay less likely, but it's important both in Madonna's career as well as how influential it's been on contemporary concert tours. (And there's several professional recordings floating around, HBO had aired one back in the early 1990s. I'm not assuming Jon Mulvaney camcorded the whole thing! )

I wouldn't release either if I ran the show there.

They aren't the same company they were when they were doing laserdiscs:
https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/List_o...rdisc_releases

And they probably couldn't get the rights to a lot of those films anyway.

I'm new to collecting Criterions but have gotten into them big time. I am wondering when the criterion website has there flash 50% off sales, if they titles can regularly be had for around $16? As it seems most are around $32 on the site now?

You won't get them cheaper than $19.99 with free shipping beyond $50 on the CC site. To get them at $16, check the trading forum here or wait until the BN sale and use a coupon for every one.

This page is your friend:
https://www.blu-ray.com/deals/?showp...udiorating=all

Flash sales are usually in winter and fall. I think October and February. B&N 50% sales in July and November.

I consider this to be one of the more powerful films in the collection. Can you qualify what you mean by "shallow"?

I had that exact same thought when watching Dont Look Back last night. That's a big Pennebaker omission. No idea about rights or anything.

According to IMDB, Fox maintains the rights to all media.

I watched this right after Bicycle Thieves and was somewhat disappointed. Although it was emotional it didn't grab me like BT (to be fair few films have). I appreciated it as I was working through neorealism in the collection, but it is not one of my favorite Criterions.
