Huge difference. I haven't seen the film but it has been on my radar somewhat as it was shot in 70mm. Have to agree. Based on just this one screenshot, the earlier release would be my choice - and by a considerable margin.

Agreed!

Other than La Cienaga and Black Orpheus, I don't believe there is another South American blu-ray.
My list of South American films that need to be brought to blu-ray includes:

The Hour of the Furnaces
Black God, White Devil
Barren Lives
Terra em Transe
Twenty Years Later
Limite
The Age of the Earth
Rio 40 Graus
Macunaima
A Valparaiso
O Bandido da Luz Vermelha
The Battle of Chile
(Parts 1 through 3)
Blood of the Condor
Bye Bye Brasil
Central Station
Os Fuzis
Ganga Bruta
The Holy Girl
Hour of the Star
Iracema
La Libertad
Pixote
Sao Bernardo
Three Crowns of the Sailor
Tire Die
Los Traidores

The use of light and dark, the different camera perspectives, the interplay between DeNiro's Travis Bickel and Cybill Shepherd's Betsy...magnificent. The scene shows incredible restraint; there's not a lot of dialogue, but it's not needed. Having never gone to film school, I have to imagine this has been analyzed ad infinitum.

And let's be honest. Cybill Sheperd was pretty easy on the eyes back then.
Well, you could order the film that heavily influenced Taxi Driver to a point where Taxi Driver wouldn't have been possible without it:

I've seen it get bashed some pages back, but I think it's a magnificent movie.

I think I like the somewhat cold, sterile look of the original release. The newer one also looks a bit softer, but I'll have to check some more screenshot comparisons to confirm it. I don't know if the differences are enough to justify me purchasing the film twice though, because I plan on getting the Tati set during one of the B&N sales this year. But man, I have an itch to watch PlayTime, and I found a used copy for under $20.

edit: It looks like most of the extras on the original release are included in the box set except for the 1976 BBC Omnibus episode. The box has some new commentaries and an extra documentary as well. I also compared some screenshots of the releases on my PC instead of my tablet, and the 2009 release didn't look as sharp. The film grain appears to be quite a bit larger.
Screenshots don't tell the whole story. The original is sharpened and on a large screen the new one is vastly superior, colors aside.

When I looked at it on my PC, the grain structure on the original looked kind of odd, as well. I think I'm just going to wait for the sale and get the box set.

Now with amazon.ca honoring their pricing-errors, i very much look forward revisiting BRAZIL and ROYAL TENENBAUMS again. ( both for 11+ Dollar)

Anderson isn't my favorite director but i enjoyed all of his films so far. Darjeeling being my favorite. Been a while since the Tenenbaums but i remember it fondly.

BRAZIL was great the first time ... hope it holds up.

Zatoichi and the Chest of Gold has one of the best final fight scenes in the series. I try to watch one Zatoichi film a day. Really, really like when Zatoichi shows off his swordsmanship by doing tricks.

I wish I could remember which was the one where he

at the end. I recall that being pretty badass.

I watched Paths of Glory for the first time last night on TCM.

As a Kubrick diehard, I can't believe I went so long without seeing it.

Magnificent film.

94% rating on Rotten Tomatoes--only three bad reviews out of 53 total.

And guess who was responsible for one of them?

...was there any doubt?

[Show spoiler]I know there are many out there who claim the whole film was in Travis' head, or even parts of the film were.
I just watch it and revel in it every time, one of my favorite movies ever. I don't really go in for ranking things, but if I did, it would probably be in my top 5 films. (It also blows my mind that Marty made this film after Alice Doesn't Live Here Anymore, 1974, of all films for this to have followed!)
I think the part of him being a hero is fantasy.

Alice Doesn't Live Here Anymore badly needs a blu-ray release.

Something else I love about this film (besides Cybill, of course! ) is the score. Bernard Herrmann's last is also one of his finest IMO. It's as haunting and memorable as the film is.

It's a great film. Aaron Eckhart plays such a piece of shit in that. Probably one of the most despicable characters ever put on screen. It's a story that shows how needlessly callous human beings can be. I have the old DVD, but it could definitely use an upgrade to Blu-Ray. I'm also a fan of Neil LaBute's second film "Your Friends and Neighbors". Unfortunately, his career has really gone down the toilet since then. Hard to believe that a director whose career started off so promisingly made "The Wicker Man" remake and "Lakeview Terrace".

Bosley. What a stupid name.

I've always wondered why it took the New York Times until the release of Bonnie and Clyde to realize he was out of touch with modern tastes. His reviews indicate he was out of his damned mind since at least the late 40s.

So what'd you think of Timothy Carey in this one? It's one of my two or three favorite performances in any of Kubrick's films. Even knowing
[Show spoiler]he's going to die, his indifference to the ignorance and idiocy of the court marshall still makes me laugh every time I watch it.
