Used a stomach virus this weekend to squeeze in several 1st watch Criterion and non-Criterion movies.
The Kid - My new favorite Chaplin silent. I'm a sucker for family stories (i.e. most Ozu) and this completely lived up to the hype. 10/10 The Sword of Doom - On the cusp of being a completely brilliant samurai masterpiece. The characters, action scenes, climatic build-up....then we get the ending. I can't believe the trilogy was never completed. So disappointing. 8/10 Crimson Peak - This was exactly what I expected and have come to expect from del Toro. If his storytelling was as great as the world he can visually create, then he would be my favorite director. To me this was a cross between Devil's Backbone and Pan's Labyrinth except with a story that just never did grab me. 7/10 An Anatomy of a Murder - I now consider this my 3rd favorite criminal courtroom dramas. To Kill a Mockingbird and 12 Angry Men would be ahead of this. Fantastic and gripping film. 8/10 Gilda - Hayworth was hypnotic, but the movie lost my interest in the last 20 minutes. 7/10 On the Waterfront - I waited way too long to see this. Incredible performances and nice to get the "contender" quote in context to the movie. 9/10 Sympathy for Lady Vengeance - I'm really digging South Korean film right now. It has it's own unique flair about it and the endings are always so bold. 8/10 Lady Snowblood - After Lady Vengeance I was ready to continue with the revenge chick flicks. I know Tarantino is a four letter word around here for some people, but I appreciated this more for the impression on Kill Bill than the film itself. The narrative was a little weak, but highly entertaining. 8/10 |

No, and there's nothing wrong with Dances with Wolves either. They just shouldn't have won "Best Picture" is all.
But personally, I don't give a damn about Academy Award credentials because none of my favorite movies have won many Oscars, especially best picture. With a few exceptions such as The Godfather, The Silence of the Lambs and Unforgiven. In some cases, such as GoodFellas, the fact that it didn't win best picture makes the movie's legacy look even better in retrospect because in addition to eventually being widely recognized as one of the greatest films ever made, it also has a "not appreciated in its own time" quality on its resumé. |

The old sale link is:
https://www.criterion.com/sale I don't know if they always use that URL. I'd bet on an early March sale. |

Nope, I like them. I know some people have dismissed them as "just little coffee books." Well, then, I guess I like little coffee books. I like the design elements used in them, as well as the pictures, stories, actor and director profiles, etc.
I just picked up a brand new, perfect mint condition of the 1935 Mutiny on the Bounty just yesterday. I especially love the classic films that come in digibooks. Buck Privates, All About Eve and The Hustler are among my favorites. I love The Exorcist, too. |

I don't think that would work, I'm not in the US and I guess they do not offer free international shipping! any international customers here who actually got their covers successfully replaced?

Just placed my order for:
M (long over-due) Gilda The Kid Now, to just remain firm and not add another order before the sale ends (yes, you can use the code more than once). note: The sale is limited to in-stock items. In the past recent releases have sold out during the sale, so if there's something you want, don't delay. |
