Truffaut's Two English Girls. It is a period drama that is somewhat comparable to Jules and Jim. TEG has more of a "period piece" feel to it, has less style, and has a very stiff Jean-Pierre Leaud as the male lead. Not bad, though.

Two English Girls is my favorite Truffaut. I've been waiting for a mainline release for years.

I love films that explore how grueling filmmaking can be, such as 8 1/2, Contempt, and Day for Night.
Hail Caesar! also highlights the filmmaking process from the vantage point of a studio chief in old Hollywood. Like I said last week, I don't know that it was a great film, but for nerds like us, most of us will get a lot out of the viewing experience.

What's funny is, those three and Dressed to Kill are the ones I narrowed it down to. Since this sale is going on all month, I decided I am gonna get one right now, and another two or so at the end of the month(I get paid once a month, on the last working day of every month). Right now I am picking between Ikiru and Dressed to Kill, leaning Ikiru.

Dressed to Kill is a great giallo-style thriller. Ikiru may just change your life.

Ikiru is probably a step above the rest. It's just really, really good filmmaking. Kurosawa knew how to tell a tale, that's for sure.

I just watched it the week before last. I didn't find it slow at all.

What did you think of Hou Hsiao Hsien's The Assassin, if you've seen it? I'm reminded about all the grumbling in The Assassin thread, and I find there's a similar quality in Touch of Zen.

I have no problems with 'slowness', mind. But I have a feeling that many people *know* about Touch of Zen, but haven't actually seen it. I'm just curious to see the reactions of people who've known about the film for years and are only recently actually watching it.

I would certainly be more likely to label The Assassin as slow, rather than Touch of Zen. I really enjoy both films but I wouldn't really compare them in terms of pacing.

I will say that I found Zen to be slower than it's predecessor Dragon Inn, but only because it was longer and more developed. Assassin still feels like a different animal to me.

I don't remember much of Three Outlaw Samurai or Sword of Doom. I thought about getting rid of them, but I popped them in the player to give them another shot and wound up liking what I saw. Didn't watch them all the way, but saw enough to know I wanted to keep them. They are visually cool and pretty fun.

So it looks like Kagemusha Criterion would be a better buy for me over Ran StudioCanal (least until the 4K cut releases), along with Three Outlaw Samurai and Sword of Doom.

Just looked at WBShop and they no longer have Curse of Frankenstein up in any form on DVD (excluding the TCM four pack with Frankenstein Must Be Destroyed and two Draculas). A cursory glance at Amazon suggests it is OOP all together.

With WB and Criterion now having a work relationship, would it not be within the realm of possibility for the first Hammer horror to get a release from Criterion in time for Halloween?

I'd love to see what Criterion could do with a Harryhausen film. The only one Warner has left is The Valley of Gwangi but I don't know if it fits. They did do Godzilla

Sorry to write here about an Olive release, but I'm so excited and I think some "Criterion people" may be interested (also it was sometimes in my criterion wishlist).

I have stated many times that I'm not buying Olive Blurays because they don't include English subtitles and I need them, to understand better the dialogue.
Well, here's the first Olive Bluray I will buy, that includes subtitles but in this case I don't need them at all because the film is in Greek and I'm Greek! The irony!

The film is the Greek tragedy Ifigeneia (1977).

https://www.blu-ray.com/movies/Iphig...lu-ray/151786/
it was nominated for an Oscar for Best foreign film.

it's been maybe 20 years since I saw it, but I would highly recommend it to anyone who is interested in this sort of thing.

here's something like a trailer, but it's dubbed in Spanish:

i see the complete film is in youtube with English subtitles.

For anyone that doesn't know the story, it's like a "prequel" (to speak in modern cinematic terms) to the Trojan War (Homer's Iliad)

I *think* this may be the first Bluray of a pre-1980 Greek film.

Thank for the link, jayembee! With all my love of movies I never owned a laser disc/player. I guess I passed on the format for whatever reason. But you've given me hope (although Warner/WAC probably will release this one)!
