If it means there's more Kubrick on the way, then OK.
But if it doesn't, does it mean that Criterion released this because it considers it the best of Kubrick films or because it was the only one it had access/rights to?

As much as I would like to see Criterion release Kubrick's entire catalog, I think this situation is a one-time deal with Sony licensing the film to Criterion.

I saw it in theaters and I liked it.

It's beautifully shot and incredibly thought-provoking film at times. Also, Kristen Stewart gave one hell of a performance.

To me it was the best.

I already have the big Kubrick box set so no reason to upgrade as they all look stunning.

I actually prefer 1978's Heaven Can Wait over Here comes Mr. Jordan.

Yeh i see but do you think American Pop in a Criterion special edition BD with new 2K or 4K restoration from the original negative with commentary by Ralph Bakshi, featurette, interview with one of the animators, trailers, TV spots and all that be awesome? Richard Moll was in that movie before he was Two-Face, Bull Shannon and more.

Yes i want them too! and do you agree Gandahar on blu-ray would look better than all those bootleg DVDs fans of this movie held on to waiting for a US release?

I seriously don't know what to make of it right now. Even after reading the plot details, none of it really made sense to me.

And yet, I am sure there is some kind of political message hidden in there. The film sure is artsy and weird, but it's hard to reconcile among so many senseless scenes with people urinating, puking, wallowing in sugar, defecating on plates, everything else.

I'm going to have to sleep on it. Maybe my appreciation will grow on repeat viewings, but I gotta see if the weirdness level or perceived metaphors will compel me to revisit it.

Thank God this is a rental.
Disgusting movie indeed! but do you think it's no different than things like Cannibal Ferox, Pink Flamingos or Serbian Film?

Surprised that no one has observed the fact that Criterion is releasing a "money maker" title every month so far this year, it seems. The lack of upgrades, too, is interesting. Not everyone will upgrade, so they are in competition against themselves and theoretically wouldn't sell as many titles of Le Samourai, for instance, as they would for Strangelove or The Graduate.
It would be interesting to know why they released Dr. Strangelove, according to an interview from last year with someone from Criterion he says they only do films they can add something worthy in case it is already released, and that in case of living directors they need to be in accordance and that is why they don't do Woody Allen movies because he simply doesn't care, maybe this was a case only of bringing it in print? since the only version available seems to be a best buy exclusive steelbook.

This Dr. Strangelove restoration seems to be the exact same done from Sony many years ago since it doesn't state it is new, so I am wondering how many collectors will double dip in this case, as compared to The Graduate for example.

By the way, Eureka has released the film on DVD with the original Gabriel Yared soundtrack.
I understand the bootleg US releases have the US version with an alternate soundtrack.

Did we watch the same film?

Her performance if you want to call it that was pretty empty - she acted no different than the way she does in her other films.. pretty forgettable character tbh

It's distinctive from those, but I can see Sweet Movie sharing similar political or social metaphors to A Serbian Film and Salo, they all seem to be about people being exploited by greater powers. I can see similarities to Pink Flamingos. I did appreciate the themes of Cannibal Holocaust, but didn't see much depth to Cannibal Ferox, I hold that one in lesser regard. Both are pretty different from SM imo.

She did win the best supporting actress Cesar for her performance (the first American to ever do that), so it's not like the opinion that she gave a great performance is new or rare .

Bringing it back in print is one factor and I have to imagine they viewed it as an opportunity to move a ton of product. "Strangelove" is a film that will sell with people who don't really buy Criterion discs, much like the Fincher films. "The Graduate" was much more a case of cleaning up the transfer and adding supplements. Off the top of my head, "Strangelove" is the most well-known film Criterion has released. But there is no reason to double dip if you already own the Sony release.

I think Criterion would release every Kubrick film if they could. The only one I could imagine Warner letting go of is "Barry Lyndon". Maybe "Lolita". "Lyndon" and "Lolita" are by far, of Kubrick's work from 1960 on, his least known films. I think "Barry Lyndon" is one of his best and holds up incredibly well on repeated viewings. Warner has shown zero interest in doing any special features to it, but the transfer on the BD they released is very strong. Criterion could really do something special if they got their hands on "Barry Lyndon".

Yah but even then I was unsure why she go it - after hearing she won I was pretty excited see her performance and why she deserved it - but it was an average performance and as I said, very forgettable... Maybe they liked her glasses

Besides - an award is also down to personal opinions or shared opinions, doesn't mean its is 100% the right decision/truth. Look at Oscars :P!

Shown the amount that Criterion have already upgraded they are probably looking for the ones that people will double dip on or high sellers. That vs. the availability of a good HD master would be a good deciding factor.

Doing a new transfer of a mid grade performer doesn't make too much sense.

I saw "Clouds of Sils Maria" and thought it was decent. Assayas is a great director and "Carlos" is a masterpiece. Stewart and Moretz were fine in it , but I think a lot of the assessments of their performances were calibrated based on the fact you expect them both to be absolute shit. A lot of actors and actresses are judged based on expectations IMO.

I watched yesterday an Irish-themed movie, The Informer (1935) by John Ford and I found it great!
It had a strong impact on me; I felt very uneasy during the film and a sense of anxiety like I was the informer!
(maybe I was an informer in another life, I don't know )

Anyway, I just hope it could come to the collection..

What you considered an upgrade? I mean Laserdisc included? I don't see how you come up with 3 on 2016

I see 4 laserdisc plus 1 Dvd.
