Would be great if it included the recent documentary Sembene!

For anyone in the NYC area, The Film Forum will be screening Carol Reed's "Noir Trilogy" including the newly restored Fallen Idol, Odd Man Out, and The Third Man.

Lovely. Another wonderful event I will be missing because I don't live in NYC.

transfer anomalies don't hinder my appreciation of any given film, but it sure is nice to see a great film looking its best.
Of course it looks that way when you're instantly comparing it to an old copy with overblown contrast. Look at it without the A/B comparison and it will look fine.

that's interesting. ..and that theory kinda goes along w/ what the poster in the other forum had to say about having seen an old, uncleaned print.

what was the consensus on the CC DVD transfer quality?

Here are screenshots of the CC DVD, there are tons of other versions:

It's hard to tell, in some shots it looks more like the new release but not on others.

I have the WellSpring DVD release, and I noticed the encode specs were similar across the three NTSC releases. Do the Warner, Criterion, and WellSpring releases all use the same master?

The closest thing I've been able to see was a live action re-enactment of Harlan County USA...which was a whole lot like me walking around talking to regular folk in Harlan, Kentucky. Even better than a 4k restoration!

Would Kurosawa make it so character's hair color are shades of green and blue? Is it a coincidence that this release of Ran shares the same look as many restorations of late?

they were just shooting a crappy movie outside my office here in Chicago. I've been at a new job in downtown for a few months now. I could see all the lighting equipment and cables running everywhere that were thicker than garden hoses.

look for it (you probably don't want to, actually,) but it is called Holiday Office Party (or something like that) and is with Jennifer Anniston and Jason Bateman.

I did not see any hair that was a shade of green or blue when I saw this in the theatre.

I watched The 5th Wave last night, and noticed that, early in the film, a character is watching In a Lonely Place on television.

Here's looking forward seeing In a Lonely Place in high definition in a week or so.

It's nevertheless there. If you analyze screenshots with a hex color selector app you will see some shades of green and blue are indeed there. Kurosawa wouldn't do this. Blacks are meant to be black, and whites white unless influenced by their surroundings. That is Kurosawa's style, not the overly yellowish/green for no apparent reason we're seeing in the new restoration.

I posted this in the UK thread. It's the original vs my tweak of it. Look how much more balanced it looks in comparison. Honestly if you're familiar with Kurosawa at all you have to realize the top screen is far from accurate

That burning temple scene from Kurosawa's Ran slays me every time. There were some truly amazing things in cinema before the days of computer-generated effects.

It's amazing. They literally burned the whole thing to the ground. No re-shoots re-takes there.

Black hair (everything black) is blue on many LCD displays.

I wouldn't have done it normally, but some are saying this is how Kurosawa intended it to look. So, I had to see whether my eyes were deceiving me when I saw hues of greens and blue in the characters' black hair. I do not think Kurosawa intended that. It is what it is though, and as I've said before it really shouldn't stop anyone from buying this masterpiece.
