A Safe Place
The King of Marvin Gardens
Drive, He Said

Hearts and Minds (which isn't in the set).

Bob and Bert had a production company (Raybert Productions) co-produced Easy Rider and was involved with The Monkees.

So long story short, some of these films caught on (Five Easy Pieces, Easy Rider, Last Picture Show) but all were made with the same intentions. One was not better than the other.
Cool, thanks. I've just never heard of them (not that I'm a movie encyclopedia or anything), but combine that with the fact that they're being put on the same disc together, I wasn't sure if they were more of just an extra, in a sense. Especially when you consider the price of the set, which is fantastic.

A little off topic at the moment, but I finally received my last order from the B&N sale today. Ordered 7/31; shipped 8/3; and received 8/16. Shipping was really hit or miss for me during the sale. Some items would arrive in 2-3 days; other orders would take a 10-15 days. At those prices I could afford to wait though.

I don't care if they call me "Stupid American" or "Whitey". I am White. I am American. Not stupid, but it depends on what am I stupid about. Prob not knowing "Jap" is a bad name.
I know that we, as a nation, are PC above and beyond the call of duty...but you also have to know and gauge the use of words by the person that is using them. Also, what is the intent of using these words.

My wife is Chinese (from my pic, you can tell that I am not )...she has a pretty good sense of humor, even with some "racial" humor. As long as the intent is not to hurt and/or be disrespectful to anyone, she is willing to deal with some racial use of language...and she grew up dealing with a lot of idiots going out of their way to be mean, rude, and disrespectful.

Knowing you in the brief time that we've all conversed on this forum, I truly believe that you don't have a racist bone in your entire body.

Well Criterion is/should treat them as "smaller" titles because as a business they should bank on the Five Easy Pieces/Easy Rider/Last Picture Show releases. If your a fan of Jack Nicholson, these smaller titles are like the word "gems" as you can see more acting and directing from him. Should be a treat. Can't wait. Just wish there was a way to include more of Dennis Hopper in this set. I believe he does have a cameo in Head along with Frank Zappa and Jack Nicholson.

I don't. Some of my best friends are white.

Just kidding.

But I believe racism is still around because people still inform you that something you did is racist. If I didn't know and if anyone didn't have a problem with it, no one would of known any racial thing was done. It's when people won't let something go away, is when it keeps going. (Not to say anything bad about what happened, because I liked being informed, so I won't say it again).

Totally agree. I'm thrilled that they're releasing lesser known films like this. They are gems (hopefully). I love Nicholson (particularly form this era). I didn't mean to sound like I was downgrading them because they weren't perceived to be on the same level as classics like Easy Rider and The Last Picture Show. My bad if it came across that way. In fact, the reason I'm excited about this set is because it has those films on it, and I can see them for the first time. It's exciting. I was just curious if anyone had seen them, and could offer an opinion on what they thought about em.

Lots of extra icing on the cake!

$19.99 but if you use a third party B&N online store like AAA or have a library, you can access one of the Barnes and Nobles third party stores for 10% off which takes it down to $17.99.

Then if you have a membership, if you go into the store, you get 10% off and typically a $5 or 15%-25% off coupon which brings it down even further.

Amazon had them at $17.99 after the B&N sale but it's important to note that B&N had nearly all Criterion Collection titles for half off, while Criterion had several dozen titles on sale.

It's definitely enticing but since I have "Easy Rider" on Blu, it would be nice to have "The Last Picture Show" on Blu (I also have last year's re-release of the Director's Cut with Bogdanovich's "Nickelodeon"), the only other film I want from the set is "Five Easy Pieces".

But it all comes down to how badly I spend in the November B&N 50% off Criterion sale. Hehe...

Also, no one isn't complaining about Modern Times' cover art?
It's OK...my wife likes it...I might have gone with something else.

As long as it gets released, they could release it with no cover, as far as I'm concerned!

With StudioCanal taking back most of Criterion's French classics--and I'm assuming not allowing any new old films to be released--it means that Criterion can use that unfortunate situation to help bring some of the many amazing American classics that are trapped on crappy mgm and paramount and other studios with issues dvds.
And that seems to be exactly what they are doing.
and there really couldn't be better news EVER for bd imo.
Let's hope they keep going for more because the list is endless.
btw: anyone else surprised that they don't seem to be going with a Chaplin boxset?
Are they really going to release 6 or so separate Chaplin bds or are some of the films already released overseas not going to get the blu tx?
what do ya'll think?
For the most part, I agree. There are a few studios (Warner among them) working to put out some of the classic titles in their libraries. However, these are mostly the big ticket releases.

It seems we've come full circle in a sense, with Criterion releasing more and more domestic releases, as studios decide it's not worth the time and money to give them a release. Or a high quality release, just like the Laserdisc days.

I think because of Chaplin's historical prominence and popularity, that Criterion is milking the cow on his films...IMHO.

Can anyone remember when the November B&N sale was last year?
Antichrist, NotH and Modern Times I'm sure will be all ok, but the "America" set is released on the 23rd. It would be a minor tragedy if the 50% off sale ends on the 22nd
(Presuming of course that there will be another sale in November)

I would hope that ALL of the Chaplin films that Criterion has the rights for, are given the "kids glove" treatment.

I wonder and hope that SOMEONE will hopefully release ALL of the Essanay & Mutual shorts in the very near future...I have the DVDs and these are wonderful shorts!

Another rights question, I suppose:

What's the likelihood of seeing some Peckinpah releases from CC, particularly Bring me the head of Alfredo Garcia? Would so love to see that film again.

I believe there was a blu-ray release in Spain, but I would LOVE to own this on blu, and Criterion could just be the company to distribute a new DVD and blu release. Under-rated film and I own the score CD also.
