I actually think the Sony looks better. I'm not one for extras, so I'll happily stick with the one that's in my Kubrick box set.

Latest first-time watches...

The Firemen's Ball - Aside from Dr. Strangelove this film may be at the top of highlighting government incompetence. If only our elected officials merely bungled a Firemen's Ball. Real life is much more absurd. 8/10

The Rules of the Game - I started this a month or so ago and stopped after 15 minutes because I thought I wasn't grasping the greatness. After all this is #4 on the Sight & Sound list. I watched in its entirety yesterday and once again missed why it is so acclaimed.
It is a solid story. Funny at times. Clearly shows the many faults and hypocrisy of the upper class pre-war. But, #4? I would even question #40. I'm sure I'm in the minority here although I'm not dissing anyone who thinks this is a masterpiece. Honestly a 7/10 IMO.
There are several films in the Collection that I consider superior involving social classes. Kind Hearts and Coronets comes to mind as a personal favorite.

Anyone have a strong opinion why Rules of the Game is one of the greatest films of all-time?

I don't think The Rules of the Game is admired so much for its themes or story, but rather the way it is constructed from a technical standpoint. It's like a swiss watch. You don't have to love it but you have to respect how all the moving parts work together. It's more of a filmmaker's film than an audience's film, imo.

FWIW, The Rule of the Game isn't among my favorites either. But I've read enough essays on it and studied it to acknowledge how well constructed the film is.

Do those posts really get zapped? I have posted several times although I don't think that I have done it in this particular thread, more like in movie specific threads or in the MoC one.

BTW I don't see how people find differences they look exactly the same to me on those screenshots.

There may be a region A release of "Les Amants" coming, considering that a French release is happening:

update: it is now listed with English subs. Is it region A/B, too. It's surprising that Criterion wouldn't release this, if it's a restoration of some sort.

This possibility may make some happy.

there are quite a few Gaumont releases of Criterion titles that haven't made it here yet. Lacombe Lucien is another.

edit: just took a look... they have actually released nearly every Louis Malle film that is worth anything.

Hey JW. Fumbling with the message system here, so I sent a request for pvt messaging (I think). Just so you know. Interested in coordinating around Malick and BAM without filling up the board.

Nice!

I just accepted your friend request, RojD.

tisdivine: Sounds great.

I'm thinking of starting a new thread just for the Criterion meetup in November. I guess I can be one of the organizers, assuming we all decide to buy tickets to this screening. It will be better to post in that thread so all you can pitch in their thoughts and show interest. We can have a brief meetup before the show at a bar or landmark nearby and then meet up again afterwards to talk about what we just saw and heard.

Call me paranoid, but I'm sure this is just a lure so you can find me and silence me for future announcements...

Just doing those emoticons I found this which would probably how th meet up would turn out if I came.. me being the lurker lol.

-

But yeah was looking at flights to NY and I could easily get the money for that by end of the year (tbh I could just sell a couple of my duplicate boxsets) - but not sure if I could afford to get hotel and stuff.

Wish I bought more duplicate Arrow LE sets, otherwise they would all pay for it lol - I told my dad and he thinks its silly going all that way to 'just go see a film'.

He doesn't understand :'(

Airbnb.com is da way 2 go, bro! That's how I roll in Brooklyn.

I'm more and more about paying for memories over box sets these days. We gotta get you lurkers away from the computer and in front of the silver screen!

The StudioCanal German edition looks marvelous, not washed out like the French one with incorrect black levels. Not English friendly, though, so I had to add my own subs. I expect Criterion will upgrade their Malle stuff.

Gaumont messed up the black levels for Elevator to the Gallows, but not sure about this one. I have it in the German box set.
