SUHWEET!

My order of The New World and Muriel, Or the Time of Return has shipped, and will apparently arrive on Saturday! I wasn't expecting this until Tuesday.

A new, Criterion version of Malick, and new (to me) Resnais?

Well I was just going off the top of my head and those are all good but the one I forgot that definitely should have made the list was Ox-Bow incident.

The Ox-Bow Incident is a great movie, and Kino Lorber does it right with the Blu-ray.

The above list is not a list of my favorite westerns. It's merely a list of the ones that were in my still-unwatched stack. They're all pretty great, though.

I'm too lazy right now to compile a favorites list, but it would include Rio Bravo, Stagecoach, and The Good, the Bad and the Ugly.

Because lists are fun... my top ten westerns (inc. European films)

Once Upon a Time in the West
The Searchers
The Good, the Bad and the Ugly
My Darling Clementine
Stagecoach
Rio Bravo
Unforgiven
Keoma
Butch Cassidy and the Sundance Kid
High Noon

Would love to put The Treasure of the Sierra Madre in there if you count it as a western.

I have posted about this a while back, but is there anything new about Ran? The Studio Canal release is terrible, and just about everywhere other than region A got the new 4K release. Hopefully, hopefully the reason it has passed by A is that they are negotiating with Criterion for a release. Anybody in the know on this?

Nice! I wonder if that will be the cover for the eventual Criterion release.

I also wonder if there will be a surprise special feature of Mondo Trasho. Though I doubt it as I believe Waters truly despises it.

That is possible as I don't watch a lot of television. What's more of a point, though, is what TV chooses to censor and what they don't. My 2 1/2 year old son likes to sit down with me after bath time just before going to bed. A couple weeks ago I was watching Heaven's Gate and it was an early scene where Isabelle Huppert is in her birthday suit and the 2 characters are by a river. I didn't think nothing of it, but why make a big deal and shield his eyes or stop the film?

A night or two ago I turned on the TV and Lifetime Movie Network had one of their typical crappy ' the man I loved turned out to be a crazy man,' movies playing. This crazy man was taping a woman's mouth shut with duct tape while she's pleading with him to stop. A few moments later, he is chasing her around the house with a gun.

Now I don't need to ask if you think the nudity would be censored . Of course it would be - even if she only were to show her back side. But which of those two scenes do you think is more inappropriate for a general audience?

I've dedicated the month of July to watching some westerns in my still-unwatched Blu-ray stack, and I'm having a blast. So far, I've watched...

The Shooting/Ride in the Whirlwind
Cowboy
Flaming Star
Broken Lance
Johnny Guitar
Man of the West
The Ox-Bow Incident
She Wore a Yellow Ribbon
El Dorado
Fort Apache

Butch Cassidy and the Sundance Kid (I had seen it before, but not in high definition.)
The Wild Bunch (I had seen it before several times, but not in high definition.)
The Horse Soldiers
Hang 'Em High
The Professionals

The Long Riders (I had seen it before, but not in high definition.)
True Grit
(1969) (I had seen it before, but not in high definition.)

I still have these titles left to watch...

Day of Anger
Requiescant
Cemetery Without Crosses
The Grand Duel
Keoma
More Dead Than Alive
Yellow Sky
Garden of Evil
Cat Balhou
The Big Gundown
Chism

Interestingly enough, Blu-ray.com also lists The Emigrants/The New Land as a western title. I guess that I'll be watching that one as well pretty soon.
Which out of the bunch of new watches would you say was the best "pleasant surprise?"

I'm not sure basic cable does censor butts anymore. I was getting lunch one day and they had one a show called "Naked and Afraid" or maybe "Naked in the Woods" or something, but the whole point was that a man and woman who are strangers meet naked in the woods and have to get out. And that show censored the front, but it was showing their butts in every other shot. That was at 2PM on a basic cable show, so I guess they've gotten more lax or something. I'm not saying that they don't still censor, but they clearly don't have the same requirements that they used to.

yeah, it's Naked and Afraid. there's also one I think called Naked Dating.

TV is just stupid. I know that this is supposedly the era of great television, but I'm taking a pass on all of it. Name a "great" TV drama from the last 15 years of so... I haven't seen a single episode.

If I had done that, I would have missed "Downton Abbey" -- and missing that would have been a crime against humanity. Well, in a way, I did miss it. I just watched it last year (or early this year, can't remember) -- binge-watched the hell out of it. For like three days, that's pretty much all I did.

I think this actually is a pretty great era for television, there's so many good shows it's almost overwhelming. Some of my favorites in the last decade have been:
  • Boardwalk Empire
  • Homeland
  • Looking
  • Lost
  • Mad Men
  • True Blood

Haven't gotten around to it yet but I hear Breaking Bad is really something too.

I've kind of been burnt out on the commitment of TV though so most of my entertainment time is spent on Criterions.

Yeah, I honestly can't even keep up with all the shows I would like to watch. I don't have enough time in the day.

I would add "American Horror Story" (well, didn't like the "Freak Show" season, and haven't seen all of "Hotel" yet) and I think that the first season of "True Detective" is one of the best pieces of art ever presented on the small screen. I liked S2 more than most people, apparently, but man that first season. Jeez. It was beyond powerful and intellectually compelling.

That’s a big reason why I just choose to sit out on all of it – commitment. I’d imagine that some of these shows are more easily digestible vs. some of the arty Criterion fare, but the number of hours I have weekly in which I am both 1) free and 2) mentally alert enough to watch something… averages at around 3 hours a week. I’d rather give that time to Truffaut, Ray, Ozu, Bunuel, etc. than to mainstream television.

Another thing is - I’ve had my arm twisted twice to watch modern TV. Once was for Luther which wasn’t bad, really. The other was American Horror Story which is an abomination. I thought my wife would enjoy it because she enjoys the genre more than I do, but that pilot episode had every horror cliché in history wrapped into 60 minutes; even she thought it was garbage.

Stranger Things on Netflix is one of the best shows I've seen on TV lately. As if Spielberg and Stephen King collaborated on a TV show in the 80s.

HBO indeed has set the bar. Deadwood and Luck are two criminally underappreciated shows that I wish more people would see. It's truly a shame that we only got 3 seasons from the former and one from the latter

Is there a more entertaining TV character than Ian McShane's Al Swearengen? I'd wager no.

I used to be in the TV is terrible camp, but catching up with Freaks and Geeks, Friday Night Lights, Deadwood, Planet Earth, 30 for 30 in the last several years made me change my stance

Mad Men is a masterpiece and just as worthy of your time as an Ozu film.

My easy way to watch TV without neglecting movies is simply to watch one episode each week day, since I am usually too tired at the end of a working day to watch a whole movie, I left those for the weekends.

I Know shows like Game of Thrones have become a kind of phenomenon and probably some people dismiss it as it appears to be so mainstream just based on the news, but it has some incredible episodes that one wouldn't believe are made for TV, the production and quality of film-making is in another level (at least on the more important episodes).

From the last 15 years? Most people would say The Wire, at least, though I've personally never been a huge fan, and Mad Men, whose first few seasons really are fantastically well-done, and the last few hold up with their own kind of "late style," if you will.

The TV dramas from the past 15 years that I think transcend the "really good TV drama" limitation to become something that could be more long-lasting:
- Six Feet Under, which has held up remarkably well in spite of storylines and motifs that could very, very easily seem dated now (the flashback/dream stuff, David's coming out story, Claire's angsty teen)
- Treme, which is the real standout for me; I think it's some of the best TV/Film/Moving Pictures about a place and its people I've ever seen
- Rectify, a little-seen show on IFC that is just unbelievably well-scripted and well-acted
