I remember watching and enjoying that. I checked, it's on the current US blu. Looks like I'll be keeping both copies.

I think I got $700 worth of criterions considering half price...although thanks to coupons my total was much less, plus thanks to discounted & free GCs, out of pocket was even less...but I dropped around $400 out of pocket this sale...I saw quite a few hauls much bigger than mine...

Best deal I got was Essential Jacques Demy set at $34.99+tax on double discount day...that's 28% of MRP...

I don't know who got the best haul, but I'm very happy with what I got. That's all that matters to me. I'm sure there are those who dwarfed my order. 26 individual releases and 3 box sets will keep me busy for quite some time.

I did some quick math to figure out how much of a value the B&N membership added, and it was well worth it. The movies I bought had an MSRP of $1,363.55. I got them for $541.25. After I figure for the $25 membership fee, the coupons and member discount saved me $115.53. It's already paid for itself several times over, and I still have one more Criterion sale, and two 40% off blu-ray sales to add value.

There are times where Ford just lets the silence linger on his characters, particularly Earp, and it almost makes the viewer uncomfortable at how introspective it can feel. Fonda particularly shines with this against-the-grain method, what with his lanky demeanor and gentle delivery. He's so at ease with the frame, even when the chaos inevitably ensues. Film is also beautiful to look at, particularly during the night scenes (the first encounter between Earp and Doc highlights this.) You're ultimately left with the feeling of its characters than any conventional set pieces.

Everything clicks together just right that you have an understanding for why the genre can rank among the best of what cinema has to offer. That final shootout is just fantastic filmmaking.
Probably my favourite John Ford western. This Criterion blu-ray really shows off the "western-noir" photography during the night scenes.
And don't forget the humour! Fonda trying to get a shave at the start is great.
And Walter Brennan as Old Man Clanton is truly menacing: "When ya pull a gun, kill a man."

I was looking at the Eclipse Series on the website, and I noticed that some have the individual DVD covers for each included title but some don't like Eclipse Series 4 and 17. Is it possible if someone is able to update/fix that?

After this evening, I'll have one more night of my Hulu free two week trial and I can probably only get to one more film.

I'm watching Early Summer by Ozu tonight and trying to decide on one more Ozu film for tomorrow...which I must finish by 9pm West Coast time in order to cancel my subscription without being charged.

Trying to decide between one of the following three:

-Floating Weeds
-Late Autumn
-An Autumn Afternoon

Any strong opinions on which one I should go with and why?

I can only speak for Floating Weeds: I remember it's a bit slow, but it is very sumptuous in its visuals, and I remember liking the story pretty well. I bought the Criterion double-feature DVD during the last sale--both versions (the 1934 and 1959 ones) are worthwhile seeing, imo.

Hmmm hard to decide, but my vote is for An Autumn Afternoon, it's like a lot of his other films mixed together so in a way you get more Ozu per minute that way , even though the others are a bit longer.

Floating Weeds is my third favorite movie overall. It's very different from pretty much all other Ozu films (besides the original), and is just a perfect summer afternoon movie. The colors are vibrant, the seaside locale is great, and like most other Ozu stories, it is universal. The commentary from Ebert on the DVD is great too, I always feel like I'm watching the movie with a friend when I turn it on.

Ultimately, I don't think you can go wrong with any Ozu.

Random question: How long does it take to get a $50 rewards certificate from Criterion after spending $500 on their website? Is it instant or does it take longer?

Lovely post. It's something I love about all of Ford's westerns actually, that introspective, lingering feeling it creates with all of the characters through the subtle filmmaking.

It's easy to think of Brennan as only playing wise, somewhat grumpy old coots. My first awareness of him was as that very type in The Real McCoys on tv and as John Wayne's loyal sidekick in Red River. It was quite a shock seeing him as the hateful patriarch in My Darling Clementine. I think my favorite Brennan role is as Judge Roy Bean in The Westerner. Gary Cooper gets top billing but it's Brennan's film and he won another Oscar for his performance.

Is that Zatoichi set the Blu only? Just curious about the size of the box. I have the blu/dvd set still sealed and im thinking of selling it and getting the blu only box. Space is a major issue but if its only a little smaller it isnt worth the hassle.

Not being funny here, but you could do it yourself if you like - all you have to do is grab the covers (which might be the hardest bit) and set up the individual entries (for the disks). The icing on the cake is to set up the actual films as well, if they don't exist. If you do the films, do them first as you can then create the DVD from the film entry. (If the film already exists, you can go straight to entering the DVD from its entry).

For the box set, there is a field to enter the individual disk IDs so that they appear in the listing, and you put the film names in the overall title so they appear in the sub heading.

I did that for the giant French Rohmer set - it was a lot of work but fun.

Here are some useful links:

Adding a film to the database

Adding cast or crew

You can look at how I did it for the Rohmer set for guidance:

It's the dual format set...blu only set is yet to be released.
