Yeah the portrait re-print comes with a trade-off, while you lose some film-grabs and larger stills you gain compatibility and a more reading-friendly experience. One of the amazon reviewers shared that he had to cushion or table the previous book in order to safely leaf through it. I think if you’re buying it for the stills then the previous edition is definitely the way to go but the portrait one certainly offers manoeuvrability and therefore a much more convenient read. Let's not overlook the price variance.
I hope they do a similar treatment for the Chaplin & Bond editions too.

Just received my copy of Taschen's The Stanley Kubrick Archives and it's probably the most stunning book I'm ever likely to own film or otherwise.

I personally prefer the portrait design to scrapbooky-landscape orientation and feel it's more easy to hold and leaf through. The erect spine looks great on the shelf too. The font is perfectly legible and the stills are simply gobsmacking. I also did a comparison with a criterion for a size reference.

Looks great, and absolutely a steal at the price it's selling for. Definitely not too small a form-factor either

Bad Day at Black Rock would be a great release. I assume That WB Archives will release The Naked Spur.

In the Warner Archive thread, I listed a handful of other Warner-controlled (i.e. WB, MGM, and RKO) titles that Criterion had had in the Collection back in the laserdisc days, not including any that Warner has released on blu-ray themselves. They include:

The version of Show Boat that Criterion released was the 1936 version by James Whale. Ownership of that version came into MGM's hands when it bought the rights to do their 1951 remake, which is why it's under Warner's control now. MGM made a habit of this sort of thing. They also acquired ownership of the 1933 RKO version of Little Women when they remade it in 1949, as well as the 1932 Paramount version of Dr. Jekyll and Mr. Hyde when they remade it in 1941. Just to name two other examples.

Yeah, if I had thought back to my own laserdisc collection I would have remembered they had The Magnificent Ambersons and Citizen Kane. The only other RKO title that I later remembered they released was King Kong. Having had Bad Day at Black Rock on LD is hopefully a good sign they'll now be able to release it again on BD.

I'd love that Rouben Mamoulian/Frederick March version of Dr. Jekyll to get the Criterion treatment. It's too bad Kino has Love Me Tonight or I could have dreamed of a Mamoulian Criterion double feature release.

Well, there were a couple of others that come to mind. Cat People, which they've "gotten back". The Devil and Daniel Webster, which they released on LD and DVD -- I'm not sure what the rights "provenance" is for this one. And The Most Dangerous Game, which might be in the Public Domain.

FWIW, I saw Pierrot Le Fou in a theatre this afternoon, and the Sam Fuller scene was not green-tinted. And the scene where they're lying on the beach looking at the moon had a blue hue to it.

I noticed Criterion released a DVD of "Contempt" in the past. I have StudioCanal's Blu-ray, and it's nice, but. . . you know. Anyone have an idea of the rights? Or if Criterion might ever upgrade this with a 4K-scanned Blu?

Criterion lost the rights, along with a boatload of other StudioCanal-owned titles.

It shares a very similar premise, but it's not exactly a remake. Zucker obviously was very inspired by IAMMMMW though.

Speaking of the Zuckers....i wish they had a film in the collection. Or other comedy filmmakers of the 80s in general such as Albert Brooks

Gummo would be a good choice for Criterion for a number of different reasons
