Apologies if this has been posted. I saw Moonlight a week or so ago and have been listening to Jenkins interviews ever since. Very articulate and insightful guy, and it's nice to hear him address a clear influence (though I don't really see In the Mood in his film as some do.)
The last act (which is on a higher plane of quality than the first two) is very influenced by WKW. When we arrived at that certain location, it's all I could think of. All this strikes me as odd because that's when the film rises above its influences and pretensions for me and becomes something much greater.
----

Also. I'm really enjoying the quality of streaming on Filmstruck (despite the audio issues on Cranes). The Mirror and Cría Cuervos are two particular highlights of my first two days of the free trial. I will be the happiest man on earth if the eventual blurays look even stronger.

In the e-mail that you should be getting, the drawing is at the very bottom of the message. (Looking at the current one now, the clue drawing is on the bottom right side of the e-mail I got).

I've come to the conclusion that Tom Waits may be the greatest living American actor...maybe the greatest actor of all time...period. I honestly can't think of a single film in history that wouldn't have been better with Tom Waits in it.

Gone With The Wind, Citizen Kane, The Wizard of Oz, 2001: A Space Odyssey, Star Wars, Avatar, Point Break, The Terminator...even Top Gun...they all would've been better with Tom Waits.

I'm not even a big fan of the guy's music.

I just think his acting is magical.

It captures something.

...something about the essence of the human condition.

Ray, I consider Tom Waits to be a living genius.

Have you seen him in Fishing with John? He is absolutely hilarious at times in the scenes from Jamaica when he's fishing in the Caribbean with John Lurie. He sings "Along the River of Men"!

"Up one side and back again... along the river of men". Ha ha ha ha.

Ironically I just purchased the new blu ray of Coffee and Cigarettes during the Amazon Warner Bros. Archive sale and can't wait to watch this hilarious film again! I saw the premiere of this film at the Tribeca Film Festival in 2004 I recall (the 3rd annual one that year). Tom Waits was just so wonderous in that film alongside Iggy Pop, when he played a man who just wanted his privacy respected.

Tom Waits symbolizes the human condition in cinema to me. His astoundingly minimalistic wit and visionary wisdom are beyond space and time. He is the greatest face of the downtrodden male, and hard on the luck alcoholic, and homeless drifter who has a great heart and musical talent. In Ironweed, he was fantastic too, alongside Jack Nicholson and Meryl Streep, playing a homeless man in upstate New York. In Down by Law, he was the innocent victim caught up with the wrong crowd. In At Play in the Fields of the Lord, he was a rough around the edges bush pilot. In Bram Stoker's Dracula, he was a manic, crazy old freak with a touch of psychic ESP I wouldn't doubt. In The Imaginarium of Doctor Parnassus, he was the deceptive devil himself donned in a bowler hat and a sly moustache. In The Fisher King, he was a crippled veteran with street wisdom spanning the universe. In Rumble Fish, he was the wise old coffeehouse barista who already knew what young punks were capable of. In The Book of Eli, he was the guarded but cooperative shopkeeper in a post-apocalyptic world reminiscent of the wild west.

I can go on and on and on and on and on...

Tom Waits just rules. Period. Enough said.

Have you ever seen the Tom Waits video that is synched to footage of the Cookie Monster? It's probably the funniest thing that I've ever seen on the internet.

Tom Waits/Cookie Monster mashup - "God's Away on Business"

Hilarious video! Thanks Owl, for sharing this one!

I never thought of Tom Waits as the cookie monster but this one works perfectly!

Down by Law is still one of my fave. Criterions. You. MUST. watch. immediately. Or. else.

Okay so challenge for you. What are his best roles. Movies that he's not just in a couple scenes for. I'm asking because now I really want to check out some of his films. Some of the best if possible

Tom Waits is everything.

I believe there was a little conversation about him a few weeks ago.

But he is a true talent. As much as I have listened to his music, or seen the films he's been in, I simply just love watching/reading his interviews.

And I also just cannot wait for this:

https://www.theguardian.com/music/20...rnatural-drama

And now we can add on Rumble Fish to the collection!

Rumble Fish would be a pretty big deal.

I wish that The Outsiders would show up in The Collection, although the Director's Cut is already out on Blu-ray. Both movies were directed by Coppola, and both of them star Matt Dillon and Diane Lane. Not to mention that both are novels by S.E. Hinton.

Of course, The 3 Penny Opera upgrade sounds more Criterion-ish.

I even through for a few seconds that my dream of a Criterion Blu-ray of Piranha 2: The Spawning was coming to fruition, but the above choices are more probable.

Would absolutely love to see this. Is this the first Coppola to join the collection?
