I really like WINTER SLEEP myself. I think Ceylan only gets better with every passing film. I found the 195 minutes to just fly and found it quite the tense and claustrophobic experience.

I kind of want to pick it up soon and check it out again, though its a commitment.

It's not like I don't want to. I've just had so much on my Real Life plate the last year and a half that I haven't been able to allocate anywhere close to as much film time as I'd like.

Universal's rights on their Hitchcock's holdings is good for about another 50 years as well. There's no way they license them unless the bottom falls out of the home video industry.

Yeah, because that's already been announced. So it's not that.

Sometimes they hint at stuff already announced. For instance, last year's drawing had Bicycle Thieves, and The Kid in it, which were already announced.

Is there any reason why so many popular Asian films are unavailable on Blu-ray in the USA? I feel like there's such a huge market for them.

I would love this to be true but they're just too different imo.

And it you were to use the clue to hint at something quite specific - the window design on the old box set - you'd probably at least get the window the same shape?

Unless it's a double bluff...

I imagine Japanese license holders are part of the problem in some cases. I have heard numerous reports of studios over there demanding too high prices for access to their films, and even when they do license one, they still like to control aspects of its release.

We really need more Bong Joon-Ho and Kim Jee-Woon on Blu-ray.

There is a Turkish blu Ray of Three Monkeys and the A/V quality is quite solid.

Default 16 Candles (Criterion Collection)

The NYE drawing reminds me of last halloween.. still, at this point anything's possible.

But, hey, if 16 Candles doesn't make it. Ah think I'll stop believing in tooth fairy and Santa Claus. #johnhughes4eva

I just bought Korean imports of 'The Foul King' and 'The Good, The Bad & The Weird' (much better Korean cut) on blu ray. Happy to have them but Korean discs are so expensive and go OOP so quickly. At least they're better quality than much of the upscales China uses on their HD releases.

I was so surprised when Criterion released 'Secret Sunshine'.

I also need more Song Kang-ho and Ryoo Seung-wan in HD. 'City of Violence'? 'The Show Must Go On'? Hellooooooo Criterion.

Personally I'm anxious to get all the Bergman and Godard titles they've released up to HD snuff. I know, I know: rights issues, blah, blah, blah. But still...

I wonder if part of the issue is that most Asian countries are Region A, so a lot of the movies you might be thinking of may already have a Region A release. Whether or not they're English friendly is another story, but Hong Kong and Korean releases frequently are.

If you're a serious Asian film fan though, I'd think you'd have to be region free. Not having access to a catalog of films like Third Window has in the UK would be problematic.

People are probably tired of me saying it but Criterion needs to release more films by Hirozaku Kore-Eda and Lee Chang-dong.

Very much want to upgrade my remaining Bergman to BD. Are there any known rights issues preventing some of his films from receiving a new release? Aware it's a general DVD to Blu issue, but I've been waiting to buy/see Scenes from a Marriage for too long...
