Really quite liked the film, though. It's a brief (55 minutes!) tragic fable that's highly effective. I LOVED the score that was used and hope that it is on the potential disc. It's a very hauntingly somber melody that offers a very specific mood and fits the images nicely. If you have the ability to check this out via Watch TCM for the next week, I def. recommend it. |

To all our American posters, Happy 4th of July!!!!
How about a picture of a young Marilyn Monroe, recently immortalized in the Criterion Collection with The Asphalt Jungle, for a little red, white and blue homage? She was surely an American icon. ![]() |

I saw Carnival of Souls on blu-ray the other day. Seen it a few times before but it still has the power to spook, and Candace Hillgloss' performance is a stunner. I no longer have the Criterion DVD to compare but I'm pretty sure I wasn't getting to discern the patterns on the clothes and textures of objects like on this new restoration. From memory, the new transfer seems brighter, and having a significantly improved grayscale, making the actually dark scenes stand out in greater contrast.
I don't mind the lack of the so-called Director's Cut, I can't think of anything specific that I miss from it. The new essay by David Cairns is pretty good and worth sitting through. While the new cover art is more reminiscent of the style of the movie I do wish they had kept some remnant of the old colorful art, I quite liked it. ![]() |

Got my last 2 from my ebay haul. Certainly in no rush to pre-order any more blus now!
Only own 1 on blu, 2 on DVD & 6 are blind buys The only one I am gutted that I missed out on is The Game - ironic cos that's the the title that led me to the seller! Glad that I missed The Fisher King as I never knew that had a UK release & was tempted by Insomnia but need to see it first

The SD video is why the film is unwatchable to me, and I love David Lynch. But I've tried 4 times to get through it, and aside from it being made up of unrelated short film experiments that never connected together anyway (hence why it makes little sense), the video is just so bad and ugly that I can't get more than halfway before I get completely bored. There are some better looking DV films out there, but Lynch didn't even care about lighting to focus (so many shots are back focused because h has the camera too close, out of the lens' focus range).
