I'm curious what's so tin foil about it. If it was on the up-and-up why isn't anyone telling their consumers about the "feature"? No need to go into here I suppose, but it's like people haven't paid any attention to these companies' attempts at "anti" piracy for the last 2 decades. Everyone ignores it until it's too late. But whatevs.

However I will be back with an "I told you so" when it happens. (I'm immature).

Yes, a Malick version of Armageddon would be great, but so would a David Lynch edit of that film too.

Yeah, there's a review on Amazon UK which says it's not even a good bootleg, just an upscale. But the fact that they'd even bother to pirate it means that it is a higher profile title than I had realized.

Plus, I just love the alternate Spanish title "Whisky y Gloria".

The upcoming Olympics box set looks marvellous.

But it's missing something absolutely crucial.

For the Sydney 2000 Olympics, Criterion NEEDS to include The Dream with Roy and H.G.

Sydney 2000 would've been nothing without these two.

There's no choice but to include it, no exceptions.

In other news, went to a screening & Q&A of Beach Rats from this year's film festival circuit. I chatted with others in the (largely LGBTQ) audience, and the movie didn't sit very well - it seemed to place a lot of shame and self-hate into a young queer man, with no real light at the end of the tunnel. The direction was a ton of "female gaze" on young male bodies, in a way that felt exploitative and kind of trashy to me. A guy I was talking to said "Straight people seem to love this movie, but have you found any gay people that do?"

So, first the very explicit hint in the New Year's drawing, and now a picture from Lee Kline's instagram (Criterion's technical director) of them working on the color grading.

This seems like enough to get that Sixteen Candles thread going. How about it, iScottie?

Also exited that Studio Canal is finally releasing the Melville and Bunuel films they got from Criterion, although I doubt they will ever release them in the US at this pace (what was the last Studio Canal release here?), I wonder why don't they just sell the rights to Criterion for distribution in the US.

Edit: last on Studio Canal line was That Obscure Object of Desire more than 4 years ago...
I just don't get why Studio Canal continues their distribution through Lionsgate. I mean, they're an important company. They should have their own US branch.

Agree. You would think a company big as Studiocanal could easily create an US subsidiary without Lionsgate who's been terrible on releasing stuff here. I mean I even be willing to spend more money that there UK prices if they would release more of there stuff here(like many of the British war films, The Fallen Idol, that new Melville set, Le Trou, among many others). I mean yes I'm going to end up getting a region-free player either this Christmas or next year when I have more money to go around but I can't see Studiocanal's reasoning.

Anyone seen The Train? Rented this on Amazon today after seeing someone mention it and was blown away. Some mind-blowing camerawork that traces accumulative action for suspense. It's never afraid to pack a punch in regards to context, with the closing shots being the most impactful of them all. Lancaster is great, of course, and it was a real pleasure to see Moreau leave such a mark with such a small part. I know it's wishful thinking to get a CC release, but boy would I snatch it up in a heartbeat. What bravura filmmaking.

Not sure if it's been mentioned, but David Lynch: The Art Life is streaming free for Amazon Prime members.

Excellent film with a great cast. You may already know that there is a Twilight Time "Encore Edition" available, and also an Arrow Region B release. I picked up the Arrow after the original TT went OOP. I can't speak for the TT PQ, but Beaver rates the original TT release and the Arrow as equal. I assume the Encore is the same transfer.

Yeah, as soon as I finished it I looked it up only to let out a prolonged sigh when I saw TT released it. I'm not region free, so I suppose I'll have to wait.

Well, the Arrow PQ is fine so the TT release could be worth picking up. Especially as TT titles are more frequently on sale these days from SAE.

I'm watching the Twilight Time encore release of The Train right now, actually, purchased at their site on sale March 23 for $14.95 (+ $4.56 shipping). I think the picture quality is excellent; I haven't seen the Arrow release, but if you can wait for it to go on sale again, buy it from TT with confidence. If it goes back on sale at SAE, get it there, and save a few bucks by selecting media mail for the shipping. I ordered The Remains of the Day and The Buddy Holly Story from SAE late on August 19th, media mail, and got them yesterday in a bubble mailer with pocket bubble wrap that perfectly fit the disc cases. I've done 16 orders of Twilight Time films, equally split between TT's site and Screen Archives, and I've never had an issue. All have arrived well packaged, and in a time frame I was happy with. Twilight Time's been doing a lot of sales of late, so you're bound to get it at a good price.

There are some very minor dust specks that appear early on in the film's first scene that could maybe benefit from further cleanup; but trust me, it's not at all distracting. I had to look for them, and by the second scene, they were almost completely gone. Black levels are gorgeous, and I've not seen any signs of crushing. Keep in mind, I watch on a 32" Sony flat screen in my bedroom, so others with a larger screen could always see something, but I think the picture is beautiful. Dialogue is nice and clear, also. It only took a few seconds of Paul Scofield's booming voice to get immediately hooked. I loved him in A Man For All Seasons (also a TT release, and also gorgeous looking!) and The Crucible. What a gifted actor he was. But, I digress.

Oh, and Burt Lancaster and Jeanne Moreau round out an outstanding cast! Can't wait to finish. Back to my movie!
