What's completely f**ked up is that many political satires ("Strangelove", "A Face in the Crowd", "The Candidate", "Bob Roberts", "Wag the Dog", "Bulworth") depict events that are less insane than the actual events currently taking place in the nation's capital. We've reached a point where reality has passed satire.
I was thinking about the film "Bulworth". In 1998, that film depicted a Senator going completely off the rails. That would be considered a typical Monday now. |

TCM has been playing some fantastic old school horror films the last two weeks or so.
I watched Jigoku last night and...wow. Tremendous Japanese picture from 1960. Criterion has it on dvd. ...but I hope it gets a blu-ray release some day. |

About Criterion: I haven't been to Barnes and Noble since July 2016. I think it was back then when I saw that B&N coupons were no longer including Criterion. With B&N's next Criterion sale coming up in November, have B&N coupons continued to exclude Criterion?

I compiled a list of recent titles for next week's (maybe?) site flash sale that will knock a bunch of most-wanted Criterions off my list and net me a $50 loyalty-point gift card, but I'm having trouble finding titles to fill out my long-awaited bonus order.
I have a couple of titles in mind, and while I could leave the remainder of the gift card over into the next sale, I think it would be easier to just add another title to my second order. Also, using the gift card balance to pay for shipping irks me. So here I am, with the following question: What are your favorite "hidden gem" Criterions? This has been asked before, but I'm curious to see if anything really good has been uncovered since then. Useful information-- I have a substantial (though far from complete) collection, so offbeat selections are highly encouraged. The deeper the cut, the better. Think about films that aren't just mildly overlooked, but ones that you feel are criminally underexposed or have slipped deeply through the cracks. I'm especially interested in titles Criterion released two to three years ago (or even earlier), which I don't feel are quite as well represented on my shelf. But I'm sure there are plenty of options from the last year or two, as well. Really, anything is appreciated. No content caveats or concerns, I'm an omnivorous viewer. |

Re: your question, Feiereisel. For some lesser-owned Criterions, or hidden gems, I'd go with the Claude Chabrol films "Les Cousins" and "Le Beau Serge. Looking at your collection, you don't own "if....", which is a personal favorite of mine. I'm also a big fan of Nic Roeg's "Insignificance", which seems to get overshadowed a bit. Also, "Lonesome" is a really great silent film. "The Palm Beach Story" is a great screwball comedy by Preston Sturges. "Sundays and Cybele" is another great film that is kind of under the radar. Also, "Woman in the Dunes" is great if you like mindf**k kind of movies. These are a few titles that don't seem to get as much attention or discussion.

Highest recommendations for the following: Fellini's Satyricon: Acid trip Petronius. My favorite Fellini. Life During Wartime: One of my favorites. Todd Solondz is vastly underrepresented on Blu-Ray. This film is funny, appalling, and very sad all at the same time. Crumb: A fascinating documentary about the famed underground comic artist turns into a disturbing look at mental illness and creativity. Mystery Train: Jim Jarmusch's loving and hilarious tour of seedy Memphis. And another big vote for Insignificance by Nicholas Roeg. Nice collection. It's good to see another collector with eclectic tastes. Last edited by billy pilgrim; 10-13-2017 at 11:33 PM. |
