I wonder.

Sure, it's a more broadly popular title than something like, say, The Bad Sleep Well or A Face in the Crowd but given that it's already been released by Universal I wonder to what extent that popularity translates into sales.

People like to point to these types of releases as the big sellers that fund the niche titles but I wonder how true that really is.

Just a few off the top of my head that could sell well IMO. I don't have a problem with them releasing "The Breakfast Club". But there are thousands of films that could use a BD release or upgrade from a previous release more than "The Breakfast Club".
I'm looking forward to "The Breakfast Club" but I would add "Roman Holiday". While "Young and Innocent" is a superb movie and a Hitchcock film, it's also not one of his more well-known films or widely known.

I'm pleasantly surprised Young Mr. Lincoln received a 4K transfer.

Because they can choose to release whatever they want provided they can get the rights to it, and no matter what there's going to be double and even triple dippers to make money on. That's how it works. What they choose to release isn't taking spots or wasting the company's time.

True. I'd like to see a second Hitch box with some more of his 30s films.

Sorry, but I have to respectfully disagree. The ending of the film is perfect.
[Show spoiler]You have five individuals who couldn't be any more different, forced to spend a Saturday afternoon together in detention. Absent their peers, the stigma associated with their individual social circles begins to break down, and these kids discover that they are really more alike than they could have possibly imagined. They realize that, regardless of their athletic ability, their intellectual capabilities, or familial economic status, they face many of the same fears about the future. The rough edges that distinguish them, and have separated them, begin to soften. And in the final scene, as John Bender walks off across the football field, the group, through Brian's writing, express solidarity, and a newfound understanding, and acceptance, for each other. The ending is what the entire film is about! It's about the growth of the individual, and looking at your world through the eyes of those around you. And when Bender raises his fist, in that last second, it is a realization of self-empowerment.

Are... are you saying you think any of those would sell as many copies as The Breakfast Club?

I would be surprised if anyone I knew had not at least heard of, if not seen, The Breakfast Club. I would also be surprised if anyone I knew, outside of my film friends, had heard of any of those movies other than Eyes Wide Shut. Maaaaaaybe Angels with Dirty Faces, but that's only because it rings the bell of "Angels with Filthy Souls" in Home Alone being a reference to it.

It's almost amusing seeing how some react to certain directors, actors.

Where did I say that? The question was "what profitable film...?", meaning films that could sell reasonably well, obviously not as much as "The Breakfast Club". There are very few films that would sell as much as "The Breakfast Club". Maybe "Pulp Fiction" or several others would sell more.

god, I cannot wait another year for Sixteen Candles.......
I was truly waiting for that announcement. I'm glad to read there will be 50 minutes of deleted scenes in this new release of The Breakfast Club but the movie had already a fine remaster.

I know this is the wrong time to bring this up, but is anyone else baffled that Criterion hasn't upgraded any Eric Rohmer? He's definitely among the highest profile and most influential 60s to 70s French directors not to be on CC blu yet.

I wonder if his popularity has waned. One thing's for sure, communication has changed since his talky, leisurely dramas were released. Or at least communication channels and how those forms limit and influence our relationships with others (and the time we spend on them).

In anticipation of BC being released I sold my Universal release a month or so ago, so I have no copies of it now. Worked out perfectly. This is no different than the other double dips Criterion has been pushing on it's followers lately. TWO get released tomorrow!! There are still 4 other new spines being released by CC that month, so that's great and what they should be doing. Seems that there is going to be a double dip every or every other month from now on, so we have to get used to it....

I for one am pretty excited to witness John Hughes join the Criterion family.

Perhaps Some Kind of Wonderful could be next in line.

... and for all those that can't stomach this news, Mint tea helps great with indigestion.

Please Give us Lolita or Eyes Wide Shut next.

Re Breakfast Club:
There may be another angle that people are not considering, which is that While in videophile and serious film fan circles Criterion is well known, it is less so in the mainstream. Titles like this, Repo Man, Big Chill, Nashville are good gateway titles to Criterions brand as well as good earners.

The Breakfast Club is hugely popular amongst kids who came of age at that time (not a fan myself, but I recognize its cultural impact and how immensely popular it is). Even with prior releases, it should still do really well for Criterion.

Look at Scream Factory, who have reissued a lot of titles over the years that were previously released by Universal (and which Universal's versions were still in-print), Scream added a new slipcover with new artwork and put on a bunch of new extras, and those continue to be their biggest sellers, even though they are double or even triple dip territory. Films of this magnitude, especially cult films, have a fanbase that will want everything and the best or most-loaded version, and will re-buy quicker than a fanbase of a lesser known title. May not make sense to many of us, me included, but I do get it - so I guess I just contradicted myself as well.

Now, when Criterion does UNCLE BUCK or PLANES, TRAINS (the only two Hughes films that I really like - a lot!) then I will be first in line to double-dip.
