J's got a gambling problem. so he'll be away for a while.

You need to contact Claire or the folks at customer support. Try them both.

Once they acknowledge your email, from there on it's a pretty straight forward process and you'll receive the new disc soon.

Maybe a year or so back, I ordered all of the MGM DVD-Rs I wanted in one go, and I had this on my unwatched stack for a while, without really giving it much thought, because it seems to have very little reputation. I finally watched it as part of a series of "first films" that I'd never seen, along with "Good Times" and "Targets" and a few other random ones. I was really shocked at how good it was, it seemed way way ahead of its time, and I would definitely say it ranks high on the list of all-time best first films, better than any of his contemporaries. I would be glad to be able to buy it on Blu, from Criterion or anybody else who wants to sell it.

He's a devil I tell you.

Although J's doing quite well at his new part-time job as a cabbie.

I once told him to drop me off at the nearest station and the way I'll repay him is by not using those damn coupons at B&N.

... He gladly agreed. So the man's still got a heart of gold.

True. Wayne is really good in this, but the wrapped up happy conclusion nearly kills the impact of the film for me. All it takes is one person to say "You bad boys, you behave now." to douse a massive conflict of egos, bah.

[Show spoiler]1. Technical accomplishment. Director Franklin Schaffner shot it live on a small set (the jurors’ room), yet it never felt stagey because of his skillful use of multiple cameras. This might not seem like a big deal now, but it was then. He had one chance to get it right and he got it right.

2. That damn white suit. Henry Fonda’s character is set apart from the other members of the jury, not just because of his belief in the defendant’s innocence, but through his profession and his dress. He comes off, to me, as superior, like a knight in seersucker trying to convert the infidels. Robert Cummings character, on the other hand, comes off as more of an Everyman, just an average Joe trying to puzzle things out as he goes along.

3. Economy and ambiguity (ok, four reasons). The teleplay tells its story in an hour, and everything you need is there. The movie version just seemed padded in comparison. The movie version gives you a wrapped-with-a-bow ending, while the teleplay doesn’t. It leaves things less settled, and gives the viewer more to think about.

Both versions are great and I highly recommend the Criterion release, but do yourselves a favor and check out all the supplements. They’re great.

On a side note, I first saw TAA when I was younger than the defendant in the movie. Back then, I was convinced of his innocence based on the Fonda character’s earnestness. If I was on that jury now, my vote would be guilty based on the evidence presented in both versions. But that’s a discussion for a different day.
Very well put, and although I do watch the feature film more than the TV version I find myself agreeing to your arguments. Casting Fonda as the naysayer was like the casting of Harrison Ford as The Fugitive, it totally negates the ambiguity of the situation (Barry Norman was right when he said Tommy Lee Jones should have been cast in Ford's role and vice versa).

Amazon only says temporarily out of stock, they still take orders for it. They're waiting for fresh stocks, or it will be replaced by a BD only edition.

G'day from Australia

I recently bought a stack of Criterion Collection DVDs (not blu rays, unfortunately!) at the local charity shop.

Just wondering if the CC DVDs have retained their colllectability and are still sought after by discerning lovers of film?

I've found in the UK at least that the second hand value of Criterion DVDs is low (under £5 on eBay typically) - I assume that is because anyone minded to import would probably already be using Blu-ray. Is it different in the States?

Some of them are more collectible than others, but their current value will be dependent on what overall condition they’re in. The closer to looking as Like New, the higher the value. OOP titles, or titles yet to reach Blu-ray, are also more sought after.

The first is that Tombstone, AZ is nowhere near Ford's beloved Monument Valley, and the other is that I could never get used to Fonda in that droopy mustache.

On the character of Earp-I enjoy the oddball casting of Will Geer as Wyatt in Winchester ‘73. The reactions of Stewart and Millard Mitchell when they realize who they’re arguing with are priceless. Are the Mann westerns with Universal? I know The Furies is Criterion and The Man From Laramie got a Twilight Time release but the others??

I think they're all with Universal except for The Naked Spur, which is with Warner.

Don't want to go off on a tangent here, but is anybody else amused by the fact that George C. Scott went on to essay 3 different roles first played by Lee J. Cobb?

Juror #3 - 12 Angry Men ('57/'97)
Lt. Kinderman - The Exorcist/The Exorcist III
Willy Loman - Death of a Salesma (stage)

The fact that their names are similar makes it even better.

I think it varies dramatically...

It depends where you go... Places like Half Price Books usually sell them based on popularity and production status.

You can certainly find some OOP titles for double or triple digits.

The standard releases sell for anywhere between $8-15.

However, thrift stores are the place where you could score a few deals and find some hidden gems for under 3-6 bucks.

How are those two movies? I initially had no interest in them, but the descriptions sound good, they're well reviewed, and the PQ got top marks.

I've grown to really love westerns and I'm definitely drawn towards "different" or "eerie" as one of the films is described.

Jubal is excellent, and it's one of the most underrated Criterion titles. This western has a great cast, and it has an engaging film noir edge.

Hellman's The Shooting/Ride in the Whirlwind is quite wonderful as well, with Ride in the Whirlwind being the superior film of the two.
