So for anyone that got The Magician, how is it? I haven't seen it but I might blind buy it later on.

Just curious, when playing movies with mono soundtracks (e.g The Magician, Red Desert, Vivre Sa Vie) what codec do your receivers report they're using to decode? I have a ps3 slim connected via hdmi to a rotel rsx-1550 and LPCM mono soundtracks always show as dolby pl ii cinema for some reason, and i can't find just a pure mono option. On blu-ray menus with mono sound (e.g seventh seal) only the center channel light comes on, so it seems to work there, but during the movie all 5 lights come on again.....

I thought Sweet Smell Of Success was supposed to be imminent. With Tony Curtis' sad death recently, it would be a nice tribute to him.

Thinking it ran approx 11/10 to 11/23 last year. 2 weeks.

my .02 worth: I was somewhat dissappointed in the movie, but only because I have been spoiled by Wild Strawberries, The Seventh Seal, and the Bergman Trilogy (Through a Glass Darkly, Winter Light, and The Silence). I can see why this movie is not considered among his "greats", but it is still Bergman and I would highly recommend it to any fan of Bergman as a "must own". My expectations were a little too high going in as I had never seen the movie before. As far as quality - it's Criterion - and they made themselves proud as usual again.

I've never seen this movie, but House just appeared as a discounted price, after reading the short description it sounds very interesting. Has anyone seen this? What are some opinions about the movie? It looks like one I'd like.

Man I got excited. Looks like it dropped from 36.99 to 34.99...

I will prob just pick this up locally at Barnes & Noble with a coupon. It would be cheaper. I don't understand why most of the Criterion prices with amazon.com aren't the best they used to be.

Never heard of the film until the theatrical release news occured this past year... but I want it badly. Seems like the type of oddity I like watching.

Unfortunately I don't have a Barnes and Noble around, but agree the pricing would have to decrease before I jump on it. I watched the preview on the Criterion website and it looks pretty good. Like you said, an oddity I'd like.

Wondering what others did with their BACK COVER insert for this release?

I was gonna just put mine inside the case behind the booklet... but turns out it is just a smidge too large for that so I just put mine as the back slipcover.

I have the MGM dvd, but to see this movie in HD in its original 1:66 aspect ratio is something I can't wait for.

I slipped the insert into the front so it displays the text on the inside of the case. Not sure why...

I actually did throw mine behind the booklet and closed the box carefully. But the question is why does this thing exist? It presents the same information as the actual back cover. Usually slips are for DVDs with only artwork on the back.

Any clue?

CLEVER! never thought about that.

I woudl guess why it has one was that the artist wanted that other image but because of the barcode and layout they couldn't and just opted for this fix.

Iwill do the same to mine for the text to be displayed thru the cover.

The menus are encoded in Dolby Digital mono if I am not mistaken. When you play the movie, what options are given to you as you cycle through your receiver's options?

On my Onkyo, I use Direct mode, as this only emits sound from the center channel, and Stereo mode for 2.0 soundtracks, like The Last Emperor or The Man Who Fell to Earth.

Until I was able to find a way to incorporate it with the "Darjeeling" packaging, I opted to place it in the "pocket" inside the "cardboard case" version of Bottle Rocket, as it fits perfectly behind the insert booklet that came with it.

I hadn't thought about putting it "in the case", so that it shows through the plastic "inside" the case...a clever idea!

I've seen it. It's definitely not a film for everyone--- although everyone should see it at least once. I think it's best going in with an open mind and to not take the film too seriously.

There are a lot of analog "special effects" that'll make ya chuckle and the humor is very off-beat. It's a horror film with plenty of charm and plenty of laughs.
