Since becoming a blu-ray collector, Film Noir has become my favorite type of film. I have been grateful to Criterion in their efforts of making these incredible titles available.

PS: I would love to see Criterion release GUN CRAZY.
The Shoot Dark Pictures Don't They is a great resource. As you say it's a work in progress, but it's a great place to explore the works of film noir. In the above list, I've bolded the the films that are ranked as TSDPDT's top 100 noirs. 13 have Criterion releases, which isn't too shabby. There would be seventeen, if only Criterion would upgrade
Brute Force
The Naked City
Thieves' Highway
Pickup on South Street
which would be almost 20 percent of the top 100. Add High Sierra, Gun Crazy, Clash by Night and The Set-Up and you'd have a really impressive collection for the collection.

Watched DAY OF WRATH last night and would love if the Dreyer box got a bump. Does anyone know if there has been any restoration work on these three films?

I'll probably end up with almost all of those, at the least, in my collection. I already own or have seen (or both) a lot of those (bolded in the quoted post for anyone who cares). Film noir is awesome. Too many great films to check out. I have an interest in everything that isn't bolded. Really wanna watch The Asphalt Jungle, Branded to Kill, Gilda, High and Low, The Killing, Odd Man Out, Rebecca, The Red Circle, Le Samouraï, and I'm eager to revisit a bunch that I've only seen once.

I've seen Salò (hell, I knew about that before seeing it), and I found via google search that the lobster rape movie is Multiple Maniacs (not surprised it's a John Waters movie). What's the movie with tree f***ing?

Also, yes please to a Criterion edition of Lost in Translation. Excellent film. I'd rather Criterion get to remasters of Universal films before Universal do. Eternal Sunshine...I'm one of the few who didn't like it much but I'd give it another shot with a remaster, which I'm sure will happen.

BFI has released a wonderful Dreyer Blu-ray box set (region B locked) years ago, including all three. So yeah, it seems there are restored masters good enough to make decent Blu-ray release.

With VAMPYR and JOAN OF ARC, maybe they’ll pop up sometime sooner than later. They seem like a good collection to tour (I can see them doing well in NYC, esp. on the heels of the JOAN tour a few months back).

EDIT: Ah, Mulvaney wrote me back! But said to his knowledge there are no immediate plans for a re-release.

All outstanding add-ons, but my number two after Gun Crazy would be Detour!

Don't forget to embolden The Night of the Hunter, also in the Top 100.

In fact, if I was going to create a Criterion 5-film film-noir compilation of films currently unavailable on Region A blu-ray, it would be (in alphabetical order):

DETOUR (Edgar G. Ulmer, 1945, USA)
GUN CRAZY (Joseph H. Lewis, 1950, USA)
HIGH SIERRA (Raoul Walsh, 1941, USA)
PICKUP ON SOUTH STREET (Samuel Fuller, 1953, USA)
and
THE RECKLESS MOMENT (Max Ophüls, 1949, USA)

and the only reason I would not include:
THE WOMAN IN THE WINDOW (Fritz Lang, 1944, USA)
is because it has already been announced by Kino=Lorber.

Antichrist. It’s more lots of ****ing by a tree, but it’s still weird nonetheless.

Don't forget Criterion isn't averse to featuring movies with clit slicing, either.

Watched Branded To Kill today.

Absurd, surreal, style through the roof, a dark sense of humour and just some all-round solid entertaining wackiness.

Actually, there are several of the top 100 noirs I’d like to see on blu, but I just threw out a handful of titles controlled by Warner as those seem the most likely for Criterion to release; however, High Sierra and Gun Crazy are my most wanted overall.

My only excuse for not bolding Night of the Hunter is that I don’t think of it as a noir, but I’m not going to start the “what is a noir” debate and I’ll correct that error forthwith. Good catch.
