Isabelle Huppert has a one-woman show in London in June if any of you are in town then. In French but with English subs.

One of Isabelle Huppert's early roles was in Heaven's Gate - while the role didn't really quite suit her, I can see why Cimino cast her. She was very talented, even at such a young age, and has a definite movie-star quality.

All I meant to say is she played a woman sexually involved with a much younger man, just like Huppert in The Piano Teacher. I don't see what the point of the smart a** comment is.

Things To Come is available to stream on Netflix right now for those interested. Scottie, you have piqued my interest in The Piano Teacher, too. Job well done! I'll be checking it out, maybe w/ a summer sale blind buy.

Shout out to Claude Chabrol's La Ceremonie. Huppert has quite an interesting role in that one- the film is definitely worthwhile.

Thanks for the Netflix heads up! This is one I've been curious to see for a while and had no idea it was available there.

While we're speaking Huppert, many years ago I saw The Lacemaker - she is fantastic in that, and radiantly beautiful. Only available in non-English-friendly DVD form.

Edit: There is an OOP Korean DVD available that has English subs. Some copies available on eBay.

She's phenomenal here, as well as Sandrine Bonnaire. Oddly enough, I watched this on Christmas day last year, which, if you've seen the film, is a... peculiar choice. Film hasn't left my head since.

And if we're going to continue talking about the greatest actress alive, Chabrol's Story of Women is very worth checking out.

Huppert is great in it to be sure, but I feel Love captures the emotional states of young people much better. Eden and Goodbye First Love are both terrific and hit much harder. It makes natural sense too as she made all these films while she was in her early to mid-30's, but I'll concede I could have walked into Things to Come with a bias.

Glad it's on Scottie's watchlist, though. Story of Women is a terrific recommendation as is La Ceremonie. I'd also like to throw my hat in the rig for three more films where she worked with a great and/or notable director:

Loulou
Amateur
and maybe The Bronte Sisters

I'm not too keen on Goodbye First Love as you (I think her capturing of youth limits her potential here, and her rhythm doesn't feel nearly as realized), but I adore Eden. Things to Come resonates with me more than the devoted nature of that film (it also helps that Huppert is a far greater screen presence), but I think it boils down to what one seeks from the respective work than it does Løve's capability.

So I watched The Long Day Closes last night. Overall I thought it was enjoyable, but not really wowed by it. Felt like the story of Bud was overshadowed by the supporting cast and music in some points. Wondering what you all thought of it?

You're probably right about Love. My engagement with her films may have been dependent on my experiences with the given subject matter. I can't exactly agree about Huppert making any sort of difference for me with Things. I've found that I'm generally indifferent to "great" acting (I'm one of the few that dug Eastwood's latest for example). Performances rarely make or break a film for me.

At any rate, I wish I had jotted my thoughts down after first viewing. I clearly liked it as I rated it a 7/10, but if I recall correctly it just struck me as a bit forced in it's attempts to make a statement about modernity and aging. Then again I'm also indifferent to this recent wave of middle aged women in crisis movies (My Happy Family being another) so take this with a grain of salt.

I liked it when I watched it for the first time a couple years ago, but it has faded from my mind since then. That might say say more about me than it does about the film.

I'd certainly like to see Criterion release more of Davies' work.

Gotcha. I didn't even think of that connection.

Good Time was kind of a weird role for JJL. It didn't even seem like there was that big of an age difference to me...
