Life is like a roll of toilet paper. The closer you get to the end, the faster it goes.

My Criterion wish list, short version:

The Virginian (Paramount > Universal, 1929) with Gary Cooper
Dr. Jekyll and Mr. Hyde (Paramount > MGM, 1931) directed by Rouben Mamoulian
Show Boat (Universal 1936) by James Whale, plus the 1929 filmed play version.
La Perla (The Pearl) (Mexico 1947) directed Emilio Fernandez, script by Fernandez and John Steinbeck.
The Fearless Vampire Killers (MGM > WB, 1967)
Hour of the Wolf (Sweden, 1967) by Ingmar Bergman
Pat Garrett and Billy the Kid (MGM 1973) by Peckinpah, three versions -- theatrical, preview and 2005 Special Edition all properly restored.
The Serpent's Egg (Sweden 1978) by Ingmar Bergman
Ballad of Gregorio Cortez (MGM 1982)
Polanski's Oliver Twist (2005) -- a John Carpenter favorite

Ingmar Bergman directed a dozen "chamber plays" for Swedish television. One of these, The Rite (1969) saw limited release on VHS in the USA and on a DVD in the U.K. but the majority of them have never been released to home video. He shot them like feature films. Particularly notable was In the Presence of a Clown. I think Criterion is the only outfit who could pull together a box-set of Bergman's chamber plays for television.

That'd be lovely. It'd probably be an Eclipse set.

In the Presence of a Clown was released on DVD in Brazil by our best label a few years ago, but it's OOP now. I'd very much like to own The Image Makers and The Blessed Ones, too.

So would I. And the others.
Did you know there's archival footage of his theatrical plays?
I'd love to see his theatrical plays.
You had to live in Sweden or go there to see them.
The BFI just released The Touch (1971) and The Magic Flute (1976) on bluray in the U.K. and I eagerly wait for my copies to arrive here in the U.S. A number of Bergman's films have not been released yet. What's taking Criterion so long?

What was In the Presence of a Clown called in Brazil?

I didn't know that. The only things I've seen of his plays are the black-and-white photos from the (great) Taschen book.

My BD of The Touch arrived this week; I'm gonna watch it next week. I've never seen the film; it was never released here, not even on VHS, I think. Not sure if it was released anywhere else, for that matter.

I hope Criterion won't release his movies on Blu-ray as slowly as the Chaplin ones. I desperately want The Passion of Anna (and even the often maligned The Serpent's Egg).

Na Presença de um Palhaço - the literal translation of the English title.

Lucky Brazil. Thanks for letting me know. I see there's no English sub option. I'll keep my eyes open anyhow on ebay etc.

Conversations between Becker and Fox Searchlight, which distributed the film theatrically, began as far back as Cannes 2011 about doing a special Criterion home-video release. When it became clear that Malick was interested in revisiting the movie, Criterion took the unprecedented step of financing an alternate version, overseen by Criterion producer Kim Hendrickson.

That meant tracking down palettes of original negatives in order to pull the scenes Malick wanted, scanning everything in 4K, grading the footage with cinematographer Emmanuel Lubezki to match the original film, and creating a full sound mix for the additional material. Malick himself dedicated the better part of a year to the project.
Fingers crossed that Voyage of Time gets released either alongside this or even included as a bonus.

That's why its better to have a box of tissues... cause like in life, you never know exactly when the end comes.

With multiple cuts of Tree of Life and multiple cuts of Voyage of Time, it doesn't seem very likely for all of them to appear in the same set. At least I hope not.

Tweet Criterion you want it released as I have been. Otherwise, it just sits on my DVR.

It boggles my mind that this hasn't been released domestically on blu. Seems like a perfect fit for Criterion.

I also wholly endorse Captain Blood for the Criterion Collection.

The film essentially launched the film careers of Errol Flynn and Olivia de Havilland, and made director Michael Curtiz a powerhouse in Hollywood.

It's precisely the kind of movie that needs more representation in the collection.

You took the thought right out of my head.

I want Criterion to release CAPTAIN BLOOD.

And while they're at it, THE CHARGE OF THE LIGHT BRIGADE.
