Hey, I haven't posted in quite some time but regarding Barnes & Noble possibly having their days numbered in terms of being in business, if they go down then I cannot see how physical home video won't eventually collapse too. I think streaming services and services such as Netflix, Hulu, and Apple TV are replacing physical media and I don't think the trend is going to reverse anytime soon. I hope I'm wrong but I think trends and human behavior are far too powerful for any one industry, even something as special as blu-ray or 4k blu-ray. Brick and mortar stores are going the way of the tasmanian tiger (aka: Extinct). I loved the Criterion 50% off sales, but with digital media, I myself find that I'm not buying as many blu-rays as I used to (actually I rarely buy new ones these days). I think the current trend is that people don't want "stuff" filling up their physical space and this is why digital media is so popular. What I wouldn't mind though in the future are 50% off sales of Criterion digital movies.

Here's another question you should ask yourself: If Criterion were to go completely digital years from now, would you still support them and buy their digital releases?

If Barnes and Noble goes under it will make no difference to physical media sales or even to book sales. Many of us buy both online now and when it comes to online retailers, as it does with actual stores, Barnes and Noble just doesn't compete.

Personally, I shop Barnes and Noble online exactly twice a year and only for this Criterion event. My local Barnes and Noble store does not even have a movie department. Other than this event, Barnes and Noble usually sells near everything at full MSRP and there is just no reason to pay that when virtually every other retailer, physical and online, sells below MSRP everyday, not just during sales.

If and when the compact disc is truly gone from the retail landscape, both online and in-store, I might raise an eyebrow. If and when DVDs disappear, I will start to become concerned. Not before.

I will never buy a digital copy of a movie, not from Criterion nor from anyone else. I'm hard headed for hard copies and that will never change. I firmly believe the quality of physical media exceeds that of digital content. I will not change my mind about that, either, so let's not waste anyone's time with the attempt.

I have had 38 internet outages over the last 34 days. My ISP still has not found the cause. I will not allow myself to become dependent upon such an unreliable, and ever more costly, service to watch movies. There is only one broadband provider in my area, so switching is not an option.

That's how I see it and the rest of you are welcome to your own assessments.

Today I watched One-Eyed Jacks and I have mixed feelings. I thought the movie was great up until he reached Monterey, from then on it flatters and the ending is unsatisfying, as if the build up isn’t worth it. However, the landscape and cinematography is wonderful, that’s what I love about westerns: the location. The desert and sand wind and ocean is breathtaking and lonely. Of course Rio is the human version of the land: moveable and solitary. I didn’t know that Brandon’s version was going to be five hours long. One can only wonder if it would have been better.

I buy music on download formats but I agree with the above poster that streaming formats at least are no match for the A/V quality of blu-ray, and the vagaries of internet access ensures that no label can guarantee a specific customer experience for a streamed program. A high-quality digital download offering (for offline viewing) may have more value, but I doubt people can afford multiple (say) 10GB plus HD downloads per movie and not fall on the wrong side of bandwidth caps. Niche labels should continue with physical formats for as long as possible.

I'm with ya. I want to be in control of my digital library, on top of that. Just because some streaming format is "good enough" doesn't mean it really is. Some of us want that higher bitrate for whatever, and don't give a damn about storage space...within reason. I rip DVD at 3Mbps video, BD at 5.5Mbps, and I haven't messed with UHD, yet. Takes 85-90 hours to convert, and f*ck that. I leave them at full bitrate. Audio is best available format copy. I'm working on more storage space...it's cheap...and multiple copies of it all over the place...I'm not worried about a failed hard drive.

I think the extinction of physical media is vastly over exaggerated. After all, Netflix is still turning a profit on its DVD service.

B&N is a victim of one terrible executive decision after another, its demise will have nothing to do with the demise of physical media as how many people actually go to the store to get a BluRay/DVD when I can order it from the comfort of home?

Also, streaming services aren't really a great option in rural areas that lack fast internet speeds. 39% of rural America lacks 25 Mbps/3 Mbps speed.

Quote:
Key findings include the following:
  • 10 percent of all Americans (34 million people) lack access to 25 Mbps/3 Mbps service.
  • 39 percent of rural Americans (23 million people) lack access to 25 Mbps/3 Mbps.
  • By contrast, only 4 percent of urban Americans lack access to 25 Mbps/3 Mbps broadband.
  • The availability of fixed terrestrial services in rural America continues to lag behind urban America at all speeds: 20 percent lack access even to service at 4 Mbps/1 Mbps, down only 1 percent from 2011, and 31 percent lack access to 10 Mbps/1 Mbps, down only 4 percent from 2011.
https://www.fcc.gov/reports-research...rogress-report

Netflix, Hulu, Amazon Prime, etc will not be an option for many. If DVD sales plummet then I would worry, but I just don't see that happening.

Here's a question: how many westerns is the ocean actually visible?

Honestly, if I had a completely digital library, I would start turning to collecting physical right about now, at least for essentials. One, this is a serious collectors' market right now given the selection and and prices. This is as consumer-friendly a time as one can imagine as far as film collection.

Two, given the recent repeal of net neutrality and the continual mergers of telecom giants, I sure as hell would not want to be relying on a completely digital library at this point. I don't want to be reliant on the whims of ISPs for my consumption of films, especially with the direction things are going. In fact, I have two buddies who started collecting again recently after being mostly digital for a long while for these reasons. But to each his/her own, just my two cents.
