I loved Personal Shopper, I went to see it at NYFF54. Kristen Stewart is great in both the films she did with Olivier Assayas. It is more about grief than it is a 'Ghost Story' & IMO you need to see 'Clouds of Sils Maria' to get the full effect because 'Personal Shopper' is basically the other side of the same coin.

Assayas and Malick are two directors where I ignore the typical mixed reviews from critics. Clouds and Personal Shopper were generally not reviewed well but I enjoy them. I think Assayas always has something interesting to say.

Someone on the Criterion subreddit says the sale will start Friday.

The guy from that thread that "literally" gets paid on Friday should be well prepared.

They have a decent size selection of Criterion titles which is often restocked during the sale. That is my go-to store for the sale though I haven't been going that often recently because of the inability to use coupons in conjunction with the sale. The Emeryville store has a decent size Criterion selection as well but you will have to cross the Bay Bridge to get there from the city and there is a $4-$6 bridge toll.
There’s also a good sized one in Dublin, CA by the end of the BART line!

Love the Emeryville one too, many of my first sales as a Criterion fan were there.

I just called my local store and the employee confirmed that the sale starts this Friday. Time to spend some money.

I wont have the funds for a few weeks. Hopefully everything I want isn't sold out by then. I know they restock throughout the sale, but there never seems to be many copies going back in stock for certain titles.

Both films were favorably reviewed and marked as a "return" for Assayas.

I like that perspective. I was a big fan of Clouds upon initial viewing, but Personal Shopper was not as clearly "great" for me. I still think it lacks a little, but it is a very worthwhile film with a lot of interesting things to take in.

I remember encouraging some friends to see it who I knew probably wouldn't like it (surprise: they didn't lol), because I thought it would be interesting for them regardless.

Yeah, I was gonna say the same thing.

They both did well critically... it was general audiences that didn't rate them highly.

I'm sorry, but this is one of the worst opinions I've ever seen.

Nic Cage is the same in every movie? Maybe if the two National Treasure movies are the only ones you've seen from his filmography.

Re: Assayas

I understand why some people don’t like Personal Shopper because the logline says it’s a film about ghosts but it really is about personal ghosts. And in true French form, it’s like the new Denis film Let The Sunshine In, which is marketed as a film about romance but it really is a more critical eye on the idea of romance.

Post-Twilight, Stewart and Pattinson have developed a really good IMDB page, full of really interesting roles in films by interesting directors. Bless.

I think you've just proved the OPs point. You can dress him up, but he's still Kevin Costner. Not that that's a bad thing. A lot of actors have made careers playing variations of the same character (John Wayne, James Stewart, Cary Grant).
