Are you saying that Criterion has plans to release IN THE HEAT OF THE NIGHT on Blu-ray? If so, is it the recent 4K restoration that played in film festivals last year for its 50th anniversary?

If it is In the Heat of the Night (which I think it is), that’ll be their 9th Best Picture winner, after Hamet, It Happened One Night, The Last Emperor, Midnight Cowboy, On the Waterfront, Rebecca, The Silence of the Lambs, & Tom Jones. And with rumors of Annie Hall & West Side Story, I wouldn’t be the least bit surprised if they tried to pursue as many as they could.

The current Blu-ray of In the Heat of the Night is generally considered pretty poor PQ-wise, so a Criterion release of this classic is great news.

For me, this would be great news if Criterion was issuing UHD releases. Otherwise, it would just feel like another placeholder disc. It's hard to get excited about an image quality improvement when you know, right out of the gate, that it's not everything that it could/should be.

I believe Hamlet was only a DVD release by Criterion.

I have it... it's not terrible by any means.

4k or bust if they're going to re-re-re-release it.

It's considered poor by many, but it's likely the best that the MGM had to work with, since the original negatives for the movie are not available. I've got no problem with the existing disc.

This is the first time that I see people defending the ItHotN Blu-ray. No skin off my nose. I'll buy the likely superior Criterion release; those who are satisfied with the current release won't. Everybody wins. That's the beauty of re-releases... One can choose whether to double-dip or not.

I'm not saying that I won't double-dip. I'm just saying that I don't mind the existing disc, considering the source material that they had to work with. I'm hard-pressed to imagine a Criterion transfer being much better, since dupe negatives will have to be used as well for that, but they'll probably bring some better extras to the table.

Yes, not to mention there were recent rumors that they had it. Can't wait.

I expect Criterion fixes the misalignment in the separation masters, which would improve the image and overall clarity considerably. Or who knows, maybe the found the negatives!

Well, that's it for this sale. Originally ordered 10 but buckled and placed an order for another 2 titles.

Now it's 101 Ways to Be Creative with Kraft Dinner.

I think this makes sense. Also, I think KL Insider said that Kino was outbid. Though CriterionCast also mentioned Rohmer box set?

I kinda wish the Rohmer idea were legit—the knee, the knight, the beach, the book... I get why they'd propose it. But it doesn't fit the pun MO for Criterion clues.

Plus, those come from different Rohmer "series" - Comedies & Proverbs (Perceval, Pauline at the Beach) and Six Moral Tales (Claire's Knee, Love in the Afternoon). So it would have to be a comprehensive set like the French release or CC's Bergman box, and I don't see them doing a complete Rohmer set right on the heels of the Bergman set.

Damn. Now I don't know whether to wait for Criterion or just go for that Arrow UK set in the near future.

Could the clue mean this?

It's based on A midsummer Night's Dream after all.

The part of me that really wants Criterion to push through more Warner Bros. film noir titles is hoping that the drawing could somehow be a hint for Clash by Night, but that's a stretch.

Now that you mention it, the man in that armor is probably pretty thin what with fluid loss and whatnot.
