I just watched all three of the Samurai Trilogy films last night and was I blown away.

I ended up just getting the Dietrich-von Sternberg box(I still have got The Devil is a Woman to watch), and ended up grabbing Dragon Inn and The Samurai Trilogy on Amazon. I'll grab more during the October and November sales. Way too many other films I need to grab from other studios and I will have a bunch of stuff to watch between now and October.

Actors have been cast because of their looks since film began. To say that a reviewer can’t mention attractiveness is ridiculous, it’s part of what draws people to see films in the first place. It’s not like Dr. Svet is holding up cards with scores on them.

What makes Bergman so good? I have The Seventh Seal and think it's good, would anyone recommend anymore of his films?

Oh, of course. I'm not arguing with that. I was just responding to a question.

Never again. I'm limiting myself for the November sale.
Call me a skeptic but I'm thinking "limiting" is not one of your strong suits.

Playing a hunch here, I think we're going to get a release of Juzo Itami's The Funeral. It would fit nicely alongside Tampopo in the collection.

If I’m not mistaken, Criterion has the rights to most of Juzo Itami’s work.

Have you ever sat in despair questioning what it's all about, questioning where's god, if there even is a god, and why this and why that?

Do you relate to dysfunctional relationships, especially within the family?

Even if you don't relate to a despairing existential and nihilist viewpoint, watch more of his films. Even with all that chaos there is still hope in his movies, sometimes.

That is true. I neglected to mention that I myself have been drawn to movies here and there because of a beautiful actress. It's not like no one does that. But don't you think it's a bit offensive if an actor gives a great performance and a critic (or whoever) only mentions their looks? That should come secondary to commentary on the acting, at least.

He made powerful films full of depth, emotion, and meaning. The man was a master of bleak drama. His filmography is one of the greatest of all directors; there are so many good/great films even aside from his masterpieces. Check out Wild Strawberries, the Trilogy, Persona; and, if you only watch one more Bergman in your life, make it Fanny and Alexander (the TV version). There are other greats like Smiles of a Summer Night, The Virgin Spring, Cries and Whispers, Autumn Sonata, and Scenes from a Marriage, though I haven't yet seen them. I really liked Summer with Monika, however, and I believe that's a solid, accessible entry point into his career, though you've already started with The Seventh Seal and liked it.

Clarification from high up on Mount Mulvaney:

They still have been splitting DVD/BD combo packs as needed (Red River and Rififi as of late) and repressing older DVD sets (I Am Curious... and In The Mood for Love) with the 'C' branding versus the old 'line' logo.

So this looks like the first time of Criterion moving away from DVD where it's no longer cost-effective.
Wonder if we’ll get a BluRay only version of the BBS Story set?

I also wonder if they’ll do the same with the Remy set.

Something is happening to the DVD box sets at Criterion. They’re vanishing one by one. I wonder what they have planned?

So I already have Seventh Seal, what would be 2-3 more films to purchase to have a good sampling of his work?
