Surely it's just a matter of time until Stop Making Sense is acquired by criterion and given a beautiful new scan?

The Virgin Spring

There are some great films I've watched multiple times over the course of my life that are part of my video library. I own a physical copy of these films and they're part of my cinematic consciousness. I understand their cinematic language and smaller nuances.

For some movies this makes multiple viewings tedious but for Ingmar Bergman's The Virgin Spring it does not matter. I went into yesterday's viewing knowing full well how the film would end. It had been several years since my last viewing but this is not a film that's easily forgotten.

The main reason why this film resonates so well with me is its execution. Much like Psycho, where I know exactly what to expect, The Virgin Spring still moves me because of how well it's scripted. Without spoiling the movie (which I don't think can be spoiled), there's a point of realization in the first act that's done with as few words as possible. I appreciate the restraint showed by Bergman. After this point, the theme of the film changes dramatically.

For me The Virgin Spring is a parable. It has a certain timeless quality and it has not lost any of its power. DP Sven Nykvist's work on the film is beyond praise. It goes without saying how terrific Max von Sydow is in this picture (Especially in the third act).

Amazon has the Classic Hitchcock Collection on sale for $65 at the moment, the best price they've ever sold it for according to deals tab of the site. I've read elsewhere that Criterion sells this for less than that during their website flash sales, anyone know if that's true?

MSRP is under $100, so it would be way cheaper during Criterion's flash sales or Barnes and Noble's sales, either of which are 50% off.

Ive been waiting for them to have another one, so I cold nab it, but I might just bite on this amazon price.

Barnes and Noble doesnt carry this set.

Anyone know when the next flash sale might be?

I call my local B&N and they will special order any Criterion that they can and it is 50% off. If not, then I would recommend doing the flash sale for 50% off/loyalty points.

Classic Hitchcock seems to be available on Amazon now, at the lowest (for them) price of $65.

Is this a new development? I don't remember it being there before. I recall it being exclusive to Criterion.com and Costco in the past.

Edit: Looks like it's also at B&N now, but at a much higher price and out of stock online.

If I remember correctly, Costco had it for right around $60 a few years ago. Wishing now I had picked it up.

They had it for one Christmas season when it first came out. I'm still am convinced I saw it at BN that same year, but I've never found any confirmation it was there -- I already had whatever Hitchcock had been released then so it didn't really help.

47.50 at Criterion flash sales twice a year October and Feb (usually)

Will Criterion release the new remaster of Lost Highway? Should be no issue of getting the rights.

My Costco never got it in when others were reporting it, so I ended up getting it in a Criterion.com flash sale (along with Jellyfish Eyes since the total was roughly the same as it would've been if I had bought just Classic Hitchcock from Costco by itself, so I figured I may as well go with the most bonkers choice I could find since it was essentially "free" in my mind).

As far as I can tell, the rights are either with one of two studios Criterion works with pretty consistently. Either Universal or MK2, who licensed the Chaplin titles, Eraserhead, Fire Walk With Me, etc.

It is true this is better priced in the flash sale, but the one problem I've encountered is stock... I had planned to get this last flash sale, but by the time I went to the website they had sold out. If it's sold out, you're back to paying the higher price.
So if you're itching for this and wait for the flash sale, I suggest being ready to pull the trigger quickly.

Speaking of Lynch titles, I'm pretty surprised that they haven't put out a release of Blue Velvet yet. I realize that the current Blu is pretty stacked in terms of extras, but it seems like a Princess Bride scenario wherein its basically gonna print them money to fund other projects.

I’d rather they release the 3 films(Not counting Straight Story since it’s Disney and they likely can’t get it) that don’t have blu-ray releases. Blue Velvet has a perfectly good blu. It’s absolutely unbelievable that those don’t at least have one release in the US yet.
