Pat Garrett & Billy the Kid... with all three cuts.

I wonder which Hitchcock films are they releasing since WB has Mr. & Mrs Smith and Stage Fright and I'm guessing Criterion will be releasing a new edition of Spellbound in the near future. Maybe more of his British oeuvre?

Saw Roma on Netflix last night. Alfonso 'Gravity' Cuaron's latest film deals with the life of housemaid and the family she works for in Mexico. It takes a little while to feel immersed with the characters, and sometimes the technique is a little overwhelming for the actual scene (like the opening shot which captures the reflection of a plane flying in the water splashed across the floor tiles for mopping), but it turns out a brilliant and compassionate portrayal of the humanistic bond between the characters, the parallels that run in the lives of mistress and servant. The scene at the beach towards the end is nerve-wracking and cathartic. Highly recommended.

The film looks amazing even in streaming HD and has a great sound design that uses surrounds continuously to generate a 360 degree soundscape. Netflix is to be commended for funding a personal project that most dinosaur studios would have turned down. As time goes platforms like this are likely where you are going to find the most interesting viewing. If you continue to solely cling on to traditional cinema screens and physical media models, you will be the loser for not supporting the formats that are currently giving opportunity to creative movie-makers to make the films they want.

Spellbound is all-but-guaranteed, but they did say that Hitchcock is connected to their new deal with StudioCanal. Kino just announced all of Hitchcock's films owned by them except for Juno & the Paycock, so maybe Criterion will put that out too? The only other non-Warner owned Hitchcock films not available on US Blu-ray (or not announced by Kino) are The Pleasure Garden, Easy Virtue (both controlled by ITV, who Criterion works with sometimes), Waltzes from Vienna, Secret Agent, Sabotage, and Young and Innocent.

Of course, Criterion deals with Warner sometimes, but I highly doubt they'll touch Mr. & Mrs. Smith and Stage Fright. Those films aren't exactly Hitch's best and are somewhat obscure. Warner Archive will probably put them out at some point.

Yes, but sometimes we have to make sacrifices. By supporting Netflix and streaming in general, we are basically joining the masses, and showing the studios that "physical media models" are not the way we want to see (and also be able to own) our favorite films..."creative movie-makers" will always be able to find a way to make the films they want...I just don't want those same movie-makers thinking that the ONLY way to get their films out there is through a method that is lessening demand for physical media.

I would rather go with a Blu-ray blind buy any day than stream that same HD film from Netflix.

And if I "lose" the chance to see a film because it is only in a streaming format, then I would rather take that chance than support a medium that I believe will eventually be the downfall of the physical ownership of the very thing that I love the most...which is film.

Damn, that's too bad. Something's better than nothing, but those films deserve the Criterion treatment, not the Kino treatment.

My wish partly came true. I'll be picking up the Kino disc, unless Studio Canal releases it separately from thier box set. I wonder what that transfer is like, cause surely Kino would use the same. Right?

As for Marienbad, Studio Canal's new restoration is solid.

Weil, I don't think everything needs to be so binary. I'll soon have over 500 films on Blu-ray, I have both Netflix and Amazon Prime, I get movies On-Demand, and I watch a lot of films on HBO and other TV. If anything has suffered it's going to the theater.

I would have loved to have seen it on the big screen, but it wasn't showing here. But it is showing on some screens in some places. But there was no way I was going to miss this, so I watched it on Netflix, and it was still amazingly gorgeous. And if it does, by some miracle, come here at some point then I'll go see it in the theater. And if I were ever to get the chance, I'd buy it on Blu-ray, too.

Hmm, I've never seen Medea, and it's been ages since I've seen Europa. I do remember being very impressed by it.

My favorites are:

Melancholia
Dancer in the Dark
Dogville

Oh would I love Dogville on Criterion. But to be honest, I haven't seen any of his films that I didn't either like or love. And The House That Jack Built looks very good and very messed up.

Ha, I've got a list of some other wishes if you'd like to start working on those too.

And maybe I was a little flippant, because Kino can do some nice work and they have deep sales, so im sure I'll pick them up. Surely they can't "Good, Bad, and Ugly" any of those releases?

But that shiny Criterion blu of Alphaville has been drafted by my imagination for so long, I hate to see it evaporate and sift through my grasping hands like so much mist in the fog of a broken dream...

The House That Jack Built is indeed quite brilliant. LvT at his sadistic and self-indulgent best with plenty of existential and idiosyncratic pondering which at times comes across as stuff he desperately wants to get off his chest and sometimes as a veiled defence for his various past social indiscretions. It’s disgusting and delightful in equal measure. Won’t win any new fans but for the converted it’s a wonderful trip down LvT’s twisted mind. Along with Burning, Roma and The Favourite one of the highlights for me this year.

I have my blu-ray expectations tempered at the moment but given that it’s distributed by IFC in the US, can’t help but hope for a Criterion release complete with the infamous ‘Director’s Cut’. Regardless, any LvT would be welcome in 2019.

I would think that Kino will be using the restorations from the Studiocanal releases. What I want to know more about is Ran after that cryptic Tweet by Janus a few weeks ago.

Night Strangler and Night Stalker look great. I doubt CC would have done any better than what we already have from Kino

I have to imagine Criterion has Ran. If Kino had it, they'd definitely mention a Kurosawa title upcoming. With that tweet from Janus, I'm confident CC will be releasing it next year.

I do the same thing. I wait for the physical release to watch the film if I miss it in the theater. However, I also know it is a lost battle. We are like the guy on the horse in the changing west who refuses to get on the train because we love our horses...

I'm sure Criterion went after Ran and Pierrot le Fou.

The title I'm excited for from the Kino deal is Henri-Georges Clouzot's La prisonniere.
