Sorry, my mini-rant for the day...
Calm down there David Lynch. It seems like most people are mentioning a Fire Stick, or Roku for their viewing, which implies a TV setup. But in the event that someone wanted to watch it on their phone, or tablet, that's their prerogative. Is it how you, or I would watch it? no, but that doesn't mean it isn't something other people can do, and fully enjoy.

Yeah, I read the Roku and stick posts too. I know, judging is such a faux pas these days. But....Maybe it is enjoyable to watch CC's catalog of goodies...... on a phone...... Stranger things have happened.... Enjoy it on those ipads too....

I only watch movies on iPod minis or in a theater with film prints! Anything in between is a lesser way to watch! And you’re kidding yourself if you think otherwise!

The app better stop the pause function, because you need to watch from start to finish! No stopping or pausing, otherwise you fail film watching!

The only problem with the new Criterion Channel is the inability to browse the entire selection. At this point, it seems, for most of the stuff you have to literally search for it. If I search for one of the more obscure titles, such as Himiko or Night and Fog in Japan, they are there to be watched, but there is no way to browse and come across them if you are not already aware. They need to implement the browsing capabilities the FilmStruck had, where you could browse everything on the service by release year, genre, country, etc.

Same here. I tweeted @ Criterion Channel and CC'ed Amazon, who gave suggestions that got me nowhere. Then I tried chatting w/ someone from Amazon and they told me that, upon checking, "that app is not compatible with Fire Stick." Very confusing.

If we get a Showa era Godzilla Blu-Ray set, I could see Toho wanting Criterion to release it next year with Godzilla vs. Kong coming out. I do wish they wish it this year for Godzilla's 65th anniversary.

Are they going to fix that? I'm a charter member but I'll dump the service if they expect me to buy new hardware or watch movies on my phone.

All of their promotional material has said it will work with Fire TV products.

I don't have the app on my phone, but I could imagine listening to commentary tracks that way. (I'm assuming the app has bonus features like Filmstruck did.)

Yeah, that would absolutely end up being an unfortunate deal breaker for me. I can never seem to get myself to eagerly watch something on my laptop and things always fall by the wayside when that is my only option.

That's why that feedback was so confusing to me. I'm skeptical as to whether or not Amazon understood the issue or if I wasn't clear enough (I laid out the scenario as I did in my post, so who knows?).

In any case, the app is up and running on my Amazon Fire Stick... only up to the point of actually being able to play the movies, which it cannot seem to right now.

UPDATE:

Someone else replied on my tweet to Criterion Channel that they received an email back from Vimeo support (didn't realize they owned VHX TV now) that "said 'older' Fire Sticks may not support the DRM/HNCP protocols on the Criterion content." I have no idea what that means, but it sounds disappointing...

How old is too old? And if that's the case then they should have advised us of that originally. My Fire stick with Alexa is less than three years old. It gets routine updates and has never had a problem running any other apps.

can't fathom being upset with the launch of the criterion channel when there is so much stuff that you've never seen on there. I browsed for like ten minutes and found like 30+ movies I wanted to watch.

that's literally a movie for every day of the next month. but there's like 30x more movies than that on the service. I don't even know hwo I could watch them all, even if I only watched stuff on the channel for the next month.

The Channel website even says that they support 1st generation & up for Fire TV.

Lol definitely didn’t say that. However I thought this would be a step up from FilmStruck and so far I’ve just seen the same things. Maybe I’m not looking hard enough though. Just from the trailers and ads they dropped I thought there’d be more, including some of the newer releases on Blu-ray.

Wasn’t sure if I’d maintain a subscription since the app isn’t available on the devices I have connected to my TV. But I’m really happy to be watching The Elephant Man right now and it looks pretty good on my PC. I’ve already added a ton of stuff to my watchlist. I hope that they put the app on the Xbox eventually, but I’m all in for now.

Edit: Well, ~35 minutes in and my stream froze up, so...we'll see how things go for the rest of the free trial!
