The restoration of The Leopard blows away Criterion's version, and if, in fact, not piss yellow. It's beautiful.

Except Police Story also is not piss yellow. Seems like you're one who looked at one cap comparison that was more yellow than the previous edition, and raised your pitchfork while ignoring the other 13 caps that all look very similar to the Hong Kong disc and have beautifully balanced colors across the board.

Thanks, I'll look into that. He's my second favorite right after Ozu

I've not seen it, so what you say may be accurate. But it does seem likely it's incorrectly presented at 2.55:1 - for which I've never read a satisfactory explanation (there's no evidence Visconti framed it for exhibition in this AR).

The Criterion DVD holds up surprisingly well FWIW, watched it earlier this year.

I doubt it will happen for while. Unlike DVD and Blu-Ray, I feel like the gap between 1080p and 4K is not as big as most people make it out to be. I think 4K is not going to be a major household thing for at least another 3-6 years.

My opinion - UHD will be dead in three years. Streaming will equal UHD in quality by then.

I'm not happy about it. I use streaming, but I loathe the death of physical media. Unfortunately, there's not much I can do about it.

Highly unlikely. Streaming does not even equal a well-encoded blu-ray, especially not audio. And bandwidth constraints are a huge limitation on what is possible in streaming. Technically you can have 4K channels but they will not be equivalent to the quality of a physical disc.

That said, in entertainment, the masses have opted for convenience over audio / video quality, and one would not be surprised to see physical media grow more niche even if streaming technology does not sufficiently bridge the quality gap.

It took until 2011 for people to finally catch on to 1080p and what a Blu-Ray actually is for once. I can still 4K UHD being toally mainstream by 2024. Heck, it even took until 2002 for DVDs to finally out sell VHS tapes.

If Criterion started doing 4K UHD, I would try to collect all of them. I've already had to accept that I will never own all of the Blu-Rays or DVDs. There are simply too many, and I'm not made out of money.

I've been hanging out in New York City the last few days and tonight I spotted Jim Jarmusch schmoozing at the Metrograph upstairs in the bar/restaurant. I went to see this crazy, zany, new Portuguese film Diamantino, and afterwards, strolled up to the bar and walked right by him (it appeared he was talking to someone who looked just like Jeff Bezos, ha ha). I really want to see his new film premiering here at the Metrograph in June (The Dead Don't Die), but I won't be in NYC at that point anymore. Anyway, just thought I'd share this.

Hey, i’m not the one that brought up the piss yellow. In fact i don’t mind it that much at all. But Police Story has the same kind of yellow push that people usually dislike about Ritrovatas restorations. Maybe not as obvious as The Good the Bad and the Ugly, but it’s there.

I hope you are correct. I have even argued with some here on this very topic. I recently had a very lengthy conversation about the Disney purchase of Hulu and the ramifications of their competition with Netflix and Disney+. Disney, as you recall, was the deciding vote (metaphorically) in blu-ray over HD-DVD which some thought as a precursor to streaming. I just wished as the masses *****ed about how dark the battle of Winterfell was people could simply answer with, "Blu-ray." The single, end-all, is you simply have to buy them or they won't release them. And you need to buy catalog titles.

Default Polyester next Criterion for John Waters

At a book signing last night in Chicago, John Waters said that his next Criterion edition will be Polyester. He didn't give a time frame, but he said the biggest problem was trying to find a company to duplicate the Odorama cards. He seemed humbled that Criterion continues to find interest in his "comedies".

Just starting the new Blue Velvet disc and I noticed there is almost an hour of cut scenes. Normally I dont care about cut scenes. Has anyone watched them yet? Is there anything really necessary to watch or just filler?

it's all gold pretty much. these were on the last release and some fans even put together a cut with them all incorporated. it makes for a pretty interesting experience in and of itself

I got lucky and found some seriously good deals on pristine used copies of Shoah and Les Blank: Always For Pleasure at a local used movie store. These are both blind buys and had been on my radar, but due to the prices I figured it would be a while before I acquired them. Now to just wait for the right mood to dive into these.

These finds made me wonder, is there anywhere online that sorts Criterion titles by MSRP? I never think to look at them until I am in the process of buying them and it would be helpful to know for which titles I should be more mindful to search for deals.
