You could also just buy the single-disc version of "Brazil" right now through either the Barnes & Noble 50% off sale or the DVDPlanet/DeepDiscount sale. That way, you would just be replacing the first disc at a much lower price.

Good Idea, I don't think they changed anything on the bonus features between the 2 releases.

Hey thanks!
Yeah I can't wait to have everything closed, then I'll be able to set things up (already have stands on order for my Mythos Gems!). Problem is what movie do you christen the new theatre location with? Granted I could crank up a Mono channel Criterion, but I don't think that's what you had in mind.
Maybe one of the Potters? Coraline sound pretty excellent, or Nightmare Before Christmas? Go the full on action route with Death Race? Or crappy movie, great sound with Silent Hill?
Too many options....

I got the same email from B&N saying Repulsion is delayed.

I'm tired of criterion leaving things out of the Blu ray that they put on DVD.

Man who fell to earth novel
Last Emperor Television version etc
Let's get the ball rolling Criterion!

Let's hope my anticipated Wings of Desire doesn't give the DVD something and not the Bluray. A pair of Angel wing Birthday cards

CriteronDVD.com hasn't been updated in a while, though, right? From what I had read, weren't these the guys that kind of disappeared with people's money without sending their discs? I know they haven't updated their site since the first Criterion blu-rays, that's for sure... and, "Nights Of Cabiria," "Ran," and "Contempt" are all OOP now, but aren't listed on the site. I don't think it's been updated since January 2009.

I have the original Criterion DVD for This is Spinal Tap i purchased from Sam Goody back when it was first released but I had no idea it went OOP so fast after it was released. (According to the link above.)

I will say it was MURDER trying to get a NON BOOTLEG of Dead Ringers... I wanted the Criterion version for the commentary and other extras... but I think I bought 3 copies before I got a good one.

Most that I got from amazon.com even at HIGHER grade prices had some issues that made it a boot like on their old logo - stating it was in the ASPECT RATIO it actually said AMPECT RADIO. Really annoying.

If you ever check the Criterion website, each film's page will tell you if there are going to be any differences between the blu-ray and DVD versions.

The "Howards End" release in October is actually going to have extra content that the standard DVD version didn't have. So, that's a good thing, right?

Yeah, I've been trying the whole "wait it out until you find a copy in person" for most of my OOP's. I did buy "Ran" when it first came out. Just got "Contempt" from B&N. Lucky enough to find a used "Silence of the Lambs"
for $15! My neighbor has a copy of "Robocop" and a first edition "Seven Samurai" that I've been trying to haggle him out of (maybe I can pull the whole Housewarming idea on him )
"Salo" I have the new edition, though I would like to find the original. Have the new "Brazil" an original would be nice...
I just counted, and I'm up to 70 criterions plusthe one's being shipped from B&N. I'm probably around 80 or so total.

I don't know if my Seven Samurai is a first edition, the only extras on it are a audio commentary, a trailer and restoration demo.

It would be in a thin case (reg dvd size). Copyright would be marked as 1999. other than that I'm not sure how to tell.
Criterionforums would prolly have an answer.

true, I watch my Criterions when I have to keep the sound down due to kids / wife being asleep

I'd go with Death Race, it's a pure guilty pleasure for me and the DTS soundtrack rocks!

One major difference between the "Seven Samurai" reissue is that it's 3 discs, whereas the first release was only 1 disc. Maybe, I'm throwing out widely known knowledge, though?

Are the bootlegs easy to identify once they're in your hand? I mean, I'm not a fan of wasting money either, but my biggest fear is not knowing I have a bootleg. I've done some reading on criterionforum.com, and some of The Killer bootlegs sound pretty tough to separate from the real thing.

Cool OOP Criterions

I have SOL, The Bank Dick, The Hitchcock Box, Ran, Contempt, the old M, Robocop, Hardboiled and a couple more OOP's.

I would like to get an OOP Dead Ringers next. It's getting harder to find from sellers with good feedback.

Yeah, I've read some of the same things about Dead Ringers. It's tough, but if you can find someone that has great feedback and can provide you with their own personal pictures of the item that they are selling (not stock photos like most people on Ebay), that usually helps. If you know what to look for ask for cloose-up of that area of the item.

The Hitchcock Box is like my Holy Grail. To find that would be like completing the Collection. I must gather my knights who say Neee! and we shall be off! Though we do need a nice shrubbery first...

That's pretty much what I do..... either the Criterions, other foreign films with subtitles and "limited" audio tracks (not like The Orphanage or Pan's.... those beg to be turned up) or my classics with mono or stereo tracks like Casablanca, The Day the Earth Stood Still, etc...

I just know with DEAD RINGERS the main red flag was "AMPECT RADIO" in that logo BOX near the bottom of the rear cover art. ANd I do hear that Dead Ringer boots are out there in big #'s

I haven't read much about Criterion Spinal Tap boots only becuase it was a FLIPPER disc - unless they thru in two DVD-Rs boots in the case.

I like to think I'd be able to foil any bootleg, but it is getting tough out there. The first check is always if the disc is a real pressed DVD, but now pirates have access to DVD replication plants in China and the like. The actual authoring date of the file system on the disc is one good check - Dead Ringers went out of print in 2001, and The Killer and Hard Boiled in 1999, so all authoring dates should be before that.

One thing for modern DVDs is region coding and CSS encryption - pirates don't region code as that limits their own customer base, and I don't believe they could get CSS encryption if they tried due to the nature of that. But that doesn't help with these old OOP Criterion discs as Criterion used to make region free, non-CSS encrypted discs.

I ended up canceling and ordering from Amazon. I added The Living Sea [Blu-ray] to bring the total over $25 so I could receive free shipping. My order has already changed to "items shipping soon." I was considering ordering from Deep Discount, but their shipping is usually pretty slow. Plus, I get more points on my Amazon Rewards card by going through Amazon.

Hopefully my order ships out today.
