Little reviews and impressions like that get posted here regularly though?
I personally don't agree with his review but it's not off topic, spammy, or whatever. It being here isn't a big deal at all.

Personally, I'd rather see posts with brief reviews as opposed to dozens and dozens of posts each month guessing the next Criterion titles to be released. I wish we could have a separate thread for that.

Totally agree.

People used to clutter this place up with obnoxious posts about Top Gun getting a Criterion release and silly conspiracy theories about Jon Mulvaney.

...it was really annoying for serious collectors like myself.

Top Gun sucks.

Some friends and I are going to see Last Year at Marienbad on the big screen next week here in Atlanta. I’m not sure which restoration will be used, but it’s going to be fun either way.

My friends have not seen it yet, so I cannot wait to hear their reactions and theories after the fact.

Would love to see it on the big screen. Fantastic B&W 'Scope cinematography. To me, if any film exemplifies "art house" cinema, it's this one.

Hope they enjoy it.

And let's not forget that one time when people thought Kindergarten Cop would be a Criterion release too.

I don't understand how Kindergarten Cop and Top Gun can be a joke in a world were Armageddon and The Rock are a reality.

I don't care what anyone says, Kindergarten Cop is a good movie. In fact, I might just watch it tonight.

I would buy a Kindergarten Cop Criterion release. LOL

Part 2, while not as good as the first, ain't too shabby either. It pokes fun at the modern PC-ness in schools, and the charm of kids being kids and driving the cop (Dolph Lundgren this time) mad is still there. I don't think that one got a U.S. Blu-ray release, actually.

DO IT CRITERION!!! A double-feature set! J/K (but I'd still buy it if they did)!

The "remake" with Dolph Lundgren was okay. As with most remakes, it wasn't nearly as good as the original.

Ray, we've been over this.

It's one of the best movies of the era, and one which demands constant, deep analysis. And it is gorgeous. Then again, no surprise since Resnais was a genius.

I agree. Those "Little reviews" have definitely pushed me to purchase titles I was hesitant about for whatever reason and I appreciate the input.

[Show spoiler]murderer-at-large
subplot to be a distraction, and John Baxter's
[Show spoiler]death at the hands of a killer dwarf
to be disappointingly pedestrian; the ending tipped the film into
[Show spoiler]slasher horror
territory, which seemed incongruous given the ethereal and supernatural feel of the film as a whole.

After watching it I read some reviews and analysis, including that it was voted "The best British film of all time" by industry insiders in a 2011 Time Out poll. I have to say I find this a bit baffling: Whilst filmmaking isn't a competitive or comparative endeavour, there are plenty of films by Lean, Reed, Hitchcock, The Archers, and others that I think easily surpass Don't Look Now. But that's just my take...

The cinematography was very good, which I suppose is to be expected given Roeg's background, but I found the PQ on the Criterion disc to be a bit of a mixed bag - with lots of inconsistency in grain structure and definition. However, a lot of it looked fantastic. I wonder how much of an improvement the new SC 4K release is over the Criterion?

Overall, a very interesting film with definite replay value.
The story of Don't Look Now is
[Show spoiler]an allegory for how we cope with loss and the main character's inability to find spiritual solace, as his wife does. John's disbelief in the end turns what he lost (his little girl) into a demon which kills him.

Hoping to attend this same screening with some friends. I've put off revisiting the film for many, many years, hoping for a high-quality theater screening.

Yes, I understood that. I just didn't care for the imagery Roeg used to convey it. I suppose I was expecting something more stylized (if that's the right word), and that less resembled a horror film. But again, this is a personal view only.

Well but, with this reading,
[Show spoiler]the murderer-at-large subplot is not disposable nor a "distraction", but rather intrinsic to delivering the film's primary theme.

If you didn't care for the mise-en-scene Roeg employed, that is another matter. YMMV.
