Not just a stunt double for that character. In the famous wide shot where the protagonist sees someone close the window in the abandoned wing of the house, it’s a puppet of Mrs. Danvers who stutteringly closes the window.

That’s interesting. I’ll have look for it next time I watch. Such a great movie.

Why is Criterion so enamored of Volker Schlongdorff? His movie Baal is the worst film I have ever seen. I disinfected my TV after watching it (this is before coronavirus). Katharina Blum no doubt is a lot better but still, how about releasing other films by directors not named Schlongdorff.

There's no "g" in his name. Unless you're deliberately spelling it that way for the naughtiness factor.

I haven't seen that particular film, so I can't comment on it. But a lot of people seem to think highly of it, so maybe it's you. That's not a snark. There are a number of highly-praised films I don't like, either. Everyone has an opinion, and they aren't all going to be the same.

And just because you happen to hate this one movie of his -- I might be wrong on this point, but it seems like this is the only film of his you've seen -- doesn't mean that you won't like any of the other 30+ movies he's made. The Lost Honor of Katarina Blum is a terrific film, as are, at least, these others: The Tin Drum, Death of a Salesman, A Gathering of Old Men, The Handmaid's Tale, and The Ogre.

With the August announcements, Criterion's DVD/BD spine numbers are up to 1041. Of those 1041 releases, only 5 have been films by Schlöndorff. So I really don't think it's reasonable to argue that they're passing on other worthy films in a concerted effort to force Schlöndorff's movies on us.

Very interesting. No surprise about the Cocteau titles - really hope they get to those sooner rather than later. The Fellinis will obviously be in the box set, then maybe upgraded individually later like some of the Bergmans were.

Gotta say, kinda bummed Last Holiday (1950) isn't on the list. Maybe Film Movement or Shout Factory will release it.

It doesn't mean that CC does or doesn't have Last Holiday (1950), GetHarryPalmer was just letting us know of the 20 titles CC has been holding onto for a while that still haven't been announced for any type of release. dwk also mentioned in the same thread that CC has Demy's A Slightly Pregnant Man (1973) but haven't done anything with it yet!

Young Torless and Coup De Grace are also excellent.

Rest in Peace Michel Piccoli (Dec 27, 1925, May 12, 2020)

Btw I don't know if this is old news but I just learned right now
This is such sad news, however, Michel Piccoli lived what seems like a very fruitful life. He's probably top two or three favorite actors for me. It's such a shame that a lot of his films are so hard to find/non-existent on disc let alone in any other format.

The great thing to note here is that although he's no longer with us - we still have the opportunity to reflect on him and his work through the medium he lived and loved until we also leave this world.

Do you think the Bruce Lee box set will come out on time & if so, how much price do you think it will drop to on amazon before release date?

Criterion has had the Demy title forever, they were streaming it on Hulu way back when they were on Hulu. I assume that they picked it up from Cine-Tamaris, Varda's company, when they licensed the other Demy titles, so I have no idea why they didn't stick it in the Demy boxset.

Because he's one of the most important and acclaimed German directors of his time? Clearly you just blind-bought Baal, hated it for whatever reason, and never bothered to learn about the man and his filmography.

Edit: I say this as someone who didn't like The Tin Drum - though that won't preclude me from seeking other, interesting films of his.

Some people believe that their opinions are so important that if they don’t like something then no one else can like it!

I caved in and decided to order Pigs, Pimps & Prostitutes: 3 Films by Shohei Imamura. I wasn't going to buy anymore after Empire of Passion and Silent Naruse. that will be it for now I have save money not spend it but I love Criterion so

Tiny Furniture & Lena Dunham really seem to instigate this kind of behavior.

As is Margarethe von Trotta's work, for that matter. Frankly, Criterion needs to start releasing some of her films. She began working solo because she was tired of her partner getting all the credit.

That said, I also thought Baal sucked, but perhaps I wasn't ready for it at the time that I watched it.

Who knows what goes through Criterions decision making ! How was the picture quality on the streaming release?

My only guess is that CC believes they could make more off a solo release of the film sometime in the future, then just having it part of the Demy boxset, now that the Varda set has been announced, we might hear something later this year or next but it's just wishful thinking.....
