I keep my criterion dvds that have slipcases that cannot be reproduced in blu-ray
Cases in point: Brazil, Videodrome, Fear & Loathing, Royal Tenenbaums

Also, Silence of the Lambs was my first Criterion so I will never get rid of that & Young Frankenstein, Austin Powers & L.A. Congidential my first DVDs

The British is HMV exclusive & they don't ship internationally so unless you have a friend or find one on ebay - they sometimes pop up on amazon.co.uk- you may as well write that one off

I suppose I should've said that in my exceptions list of reasons why I'd keep a DVD after upgrading, I do keep Criterion DVDs. Just a Criterion collection habit. I still have all of the Criterion LDs I've ever bought, too.

While the Shout factory edition of Dead Ringers may be a massive improvement quality wise, Criterion's DVD still rules when it comes to extras

Same can be said for Fear & Loathing. Whilst Arrow's new edition boasts superior picture quality, if you don't already own the criterion, it's a must to pick up at least the dvd just for the 3 brilliant commentaries particularly HST's

The Bruce Lee set will probably be my only pickup during the July sale.

Watching The Breakfast Club...

The universe has similarly put us all in a detention. A darn good time to reflect and mend our differences.

I just hope more compassion and togetherness prevails when all this is over with and we are back to the school of life. #dontyouforgetaboutme

Nice looking shelves! Tempted to post a photo of mine but it's a pain right now.

I just wanted to ask if you made your own custom covers.

I just finished watching In The Mood For Love...third time viewing.

That last scene at the temple is completely haunting.

What might have been.

What could’ve been so easily, but wasn’t.

...heartbreaking.

Watching Dawn of the Dead (1978)

I would love if Criterion had Dawn of the Dead in the U.S.

If we run out of food, at least we have each other....

I got an email from Zavvi today about the Second Sight deluxe edition of DotD. Too bad I’m tapped out of $ due to the Twilight Time fire sale.

I never thought I'd say this but "I'm done upgrading!"

Someone should make a film entitled "Qriocity".

Want my old remote?

I understand the reviews are old, and allowed for the fact that a new restoration could further improve on how it looks. Many of the films issued when the format was new have been reissued and greatly improved upon. But ten years ago, a reviewer could still discern the difference in quality between a DVD and blu-ray.

Yes, there are stretches of it that look fine, and then there are shots that look like DVD quality. The variance in picture quality throughout is astonishing to me. The sound quality is also quite poor. Harsh and echoey, it sounds like it was recorded in a basement or a shower stall. How much of this has to do with the source quality I don't know, but I think this film is begging for a new restoration and a fresh scan for disc.

I was quite puzzled by this site's and DVD Beaver's review and was almost wondering if they watched a different disc than I did. While I don't pay much mind to High-Def Digest, I felt their review is much more in line with my opinion with respect to video and audio (I disagree with them on the film rating, as the film itself is a flat out masterpiece).
Hmm, I guess I’ll need to go back and watch it a second time. When three people have a decidedly different opinion of a release’s quality than my own, it’s pretty clear that I need to reassess. Some people would push back, and defend their opinion to the bitter end. I’m not nearly arrogant enough, or stubborn enough, to do so. The mark of a good critic is that they’re able to remain humble and objective, and willing to admit when they might be wrong. That’s precisely the kind of writer I want to be. My apologies to FragnitoM and Dailyan. I wasn’t looking to be argumentative, but my experience of watching the film was quite different. There was some quality variance obvious between different scenes, but it wasn’t so noticeable where it affected my enjoyment of the movie.

I watched on a 37” Sony Bravia flat screen wall mounted in my bedroom; maybe the quality issues would have been more apparent on a larger screen. We have an LG downstairs (53”, iirc), but it’s just more comfortable for me to watch in bed.

Order or pickup directly -- some of the stores are starting to reopen to some traffic an most of the stores have been allowing some sort of Curbside pickup.
