A link to the Roger Deakins podcast where he interviews Lee Kline.

Biggest news here is that Criterion is planning on releasing a Bollywood boxset, which will have around 10 titles. They are also planning on releasing 'The Man Who Wasn't There'.

All this talk has put me in the mood for GWTW. I'm going to watch the Blu-Ray tonight in honor of Hattie McDaniel's birthday. The Oscar winner would have turned 135 today.

Well this would be pretty great news if true. The Man Who Wasn't There is one of my favorite Coen Brothers films, and the current blu-ray is pretty underwhelming.

Yes! A favorite of mine, certainly underrated in their oeuvre.

If i remember correctly, they shot in color and did a color drain.
Maybe there's a color negative out there....

That's the only good reason why I think his works aren't being released on Blu-ray but most of his films could just go with a good repair and a few tweaks and we could have ourselves a good Blu-ray release. But since Gosha is a more underrated director, I would guess that they might give him an Eclipse series THAT IS if they're still doing it which I haven't seen an Eclipse series title in YEARS.
I know HUNTER IN THE DARK has a HD master, but not sure what else in terms of what Criterion has. It's an amazing film.

If they were to release GOYOKIN and TENCHU! then that would literally rock my world. Two of the best samurai film of all time. TENCHU! (HITOKIRI)also has the best Shintaro Katsu role in his career.

It's honestly my favorite movie. Love it so much, I own multiple different releases.

Hopefully Criterion will apply some consistency in aesthetic choices for such a set, subject to availability of usable film elements. A Bollywood boxset is an intriguing but dicey proposition. Bollywood is just the colloquial name for the film industry in Bombay/Mumbai and the type of films produced in it vary greatly in content and tone and across time. It's like if they made a Hollywood boxset with Twelve Angry Men, Tiny Furniture and Armageddon. But the cost of restoring Indian films from their neglect versus the western sales of anything that's not the Apu trilogy don't make for the best business proposition. Which is why I understand them bundling films together, because they'd never get a good buzz about individual releases

That's it. I paid like 50 bucks for the whole set over a decade ago. I've yet to watch more than just a few individual cartoons in the set. My kids watched more of it than I did.

Clearly, this needs corroborating. But I thought it worth posting.
Isn't there a Criterion flash sale that happens around July as well? I'm hoping there is some sort of back-up option in case the B&N sale doesn't happen. Honestly, I don't think it would be a smart move on B&N's part to cancel the sale considering the amount of money it usually generates for them.

No, there isn't. Their flash sales happen in Feb/March and October or November. Can't recall which but near the end of the year.

I'm just happy "Come And See" will be in my hands in 18 days. Been waiting for it for too long. I think they listened to our wishes for that one.

Could you please give the approximate time-stamp for when he discusses that?

(Ran, The Third Man, Contempt, The Ladykillers, Delicatessen.) I'm surprised that there's only 5 films that I found in the StudioCanal collection. The rest are all in Region B territory.

So yeah, Contempt won't be getting a re-release for a long time. Even if StudioCanal does a 4K restoration, it won't happen as long as Lionsgate chokes all their films. And when they announce that they'll be using a 4K restoration, it's probably going to be an older master like The Man Who Fell to Earth.
With this in mind, which Studio Canal titles can we expect to return to Criterion? It seems likely Le Cercle Rouge and Pierrot Le Fou will be rereleased physically. Any others? The two aforementioned titles, to my knowledge, never received Region A Studio Canal releases.

As for the streaming vs. physical media debate, I don't see why it needs to be a zero-sum game. Can't they peacefully co-exist? After all, plenty of folks here both buy blu-ray and subscribe to the Criterion Channel. Likewise, plenty of vinyl collectors I'm sure have Spotify accounts.

And besides, for titles that are still only available on DVD like Viridiana and Ordet, the Channel stream is most certainly superior to the disc.

It’s usually a month sale at B&N in July and November. Though the huge question at the moment is will B&N hold the 50% off sale or not on time or it will they push it back with many stores not open at the moment or operating at less than full capacity?
