I don't think that information will do anything to assuage his fear (which I share). The problem isn't one of proper execution for the intended targets; it's one of proper target identification.

By virtue of sheer weight of releases, sure. You do know UHD disc has only been out for about 5 or 6 weeks, right?

Oh, it's a cold hard fact if you look at it in mikevision™, but in GeoffScope© the comparison of the amount of 'true' UHD content on a service that's been active for about 2 years versus something that's been active for 2 months is completely inane.

Hell, if UHD Blu was a streaming service then you'd actually have a point mike, but it's a physical format which needs to be replicated, encased and then shipped off to stores, all of which takes place in a very regimented timetable and with what seems to be a fairly limited capacity thus far. So yes, that makes it okay...for now.

They need to launch their 4k disk format with 4k content

But they're caught betwixt and between, mike. They need some newer movies in order to attract the attention of consumers, unfortunately it seems like pretty much everything made in the last 10 years or so (outside of Sony Pictures and Deakins' remit, anyway) is 2K so what can they do? Just ignore almost everything from the last decade?

It's clear how the different studios have approached it. Fox and Warners are all about dat new stuff with some very well received titles and the odd clunker, hence the large proportion of 2K gear, whereas Sony have gone for a mix of lower-key catalogues and some more recent - if not overly celebrated - movies.

Seem to be arguing UHD BD is really only for new flicks and regardless of merit or true UHD content.

Isn't this already being debated to death in other threads?

I said what I think the studios' viewpoints are re: the slate of UHD Blu titles released thus far...which is pretty much only for new flicks, regardless of merit and/or true UHD content. That's their stance, not mine.

Me, I'd have loved it if we had a slew of critically adored movies remastered from top to bottom in 4K for the UHD launch slate (I've questioned the quality of the launch line-up before) but the reality of the situation is that the studios aren't going to give up the crown jewels of their pre-DI catalogue right away, they're going to lead with some fairly contemporary stuff and most of that is 2K and/or garbage, unfortunately. Shit happens.

And by quoting my post you've only added to the debate in this thread.

I know it's weird and out of fashion but when it comes my money at least I am a merit based person. Not a hype based one. No one is getting my cash unless the product delivers on the promotion and is demonstrable it does (very few do) and the content is worthy of my limited free time. Upscaled and merely new flicks do met such conditions hence so far they have gotten Zero dollars from me.

No, I made the case it is a circular pointless debate that degrades the thread of which I will not be shy from highlighting.

And by moaning about the moaning you thus degrade it further. I love how the irony of that is always lost on the people who moan about how OT a thread goes in the first place and there seems to be so much of that in these 4K threads, for reasons I can't really fathom.

It seems like someone new (to this side of the forum) always pops up every few weeks with an abrasive demeanour to shit on the harmless discussions that people are having between themselves. Don't get me wrong, I've warmed to several of those people since because we've found some common ground - we're just here for dat forkay, at the end of the day - but this is starting to get tiresome. Still, c'est la vie and all that.

Well, hell, don’t send the malcontents on over to the 4K Movies Releases thread, for recently we’ve dabbled in debating porn and flatulence control….intermingled with dynamic range and an elegy to the art of film projection.
