I am rather proud that Austria took a Oscar home this year - I am talking about "The Counterfeiter" aka Die Fälscher

As far as I can see it Sony Pictures Classics holds the US rights. Natural question: Is this movie being considered for a day-and-date Blue-Ray release?

Thank you very much (and sorry for just another annoying release question)
I don't know the answer to this.

This way, if you have your PS3 connected to the internet, there is NO way you don't know the PS3 plays Blu-rays.
In case you missed it Paid, not sure if my suggestion would be given any consideration as well.

In regards to netflix exclusive...

Paid, do you have any idea of what the split is between consumers:renters on new releases. I.E. when a movie is released it sells 1 million copies the first week, 800K to consumers and 200K to rental outlets.

I know when Transformers came out and DW said they sold so many more than nielsen was reporting their was speculation that a large part of the difference was made by sales to rental outlets.

Paidgeek,

Why is Sony not releasing catalog titles on BD day and date with new special edition SD versions?

The occasional classic catalog title would be nice, especially when new SE DVDs appear (which I refuse to buy anymore).

paidgeek, (puts $5 in the coffer)
About the subtitles. I believe most movies in 2K/4K archived are not telecined with subtitles. The subtitles in the theatrical version are printed for specific scenes and depending on the language of the region the print is going. For some films, like LOTR, a stylized version of the subs are used. Here's a few questions:

1. Can SPHE do stylized subs just like the original print for BD? (But only for the feature/SDH subs and not for the PiP or commentary subs.
2. When creating such subs, do you need to install a different font into the player? How does it work?

Hi Paidgeek,

I know there was previous talk about putting the PS3 commercials on the PS Store and that ended up happening and there was also talk about putting those sexy Bravia commercials on BR discs or something similar... Is there any update on this? Is this being persued?

I'd love to have those Bravia commercials in 1080p with good encodes instead of only what's available on the web. I'm just curious if there is any disc we should be looking forward to if we're wanting those Bravia commercials... or has it not been decided yet?

Thanks!

Keep churning out those awesome discs and I'll keep buying! (CE3K included!)

I don't have a S300, but Sony Customer Service and the fact that unit only carries a DD+ logo has led consumers to believe that the unit cannot decode TrueHD. And the manual with the unit is no help either. It is rather vague.

If the unit can decode TrueHD, then Sony's CE division needs to update their database and let consumers know. I know the S1 was updated after release to do TrueHD. And the S300 launched with only the DD+ logo, but many assumed it would be updated as well. The original Panny BD10 also received a FW update to enable internal TrueHD decoding.

I would like to believe you since of the current players on the market the S300 is the only one that does not carry a TrueHD mark while all the other current players support it.

From my understanding TrueHD decoding is rather easy to implement on existing hardware since it is really just an update of the old DVD-Audio MLP codec. dtsHDMA is rather processor intensive hence it requires newer and more capable hardware to decode it.

Default Profile 2.0 Playback on Profile 1.1,1.1,1.2,.etc. Player

Profile Question, apologies if it's been asked.

Is there a spec stating that later Profile discs will play the *movie* on an earlier Profile player. IE will a Profile 2.0 disc's movie play on a Profile 1.0 (etc.) machine? Can you provide a source for this information?

I was under the impression that the movie should work in any player regardless of Profile. I just want to verify this.

Thanks.

Hi paidgeek !

This issue concerning the Sony BDP-S300 being able to decode TRUE-HD is a very important issue to us owners.

Bottom line - was the unit always able to decode TRUE-HD via HDMI output or is it now or later, able to decode TRUE-HD as a result of a past or future firmware update ??

Clarification is needed from Sony once and for all since this a very valuable update to the BDP-S300 player since more and more blu-ray titles are being released with this audio codec.

Regards;

Paidgeek does not need to confirm this again. It will work. However, the 1.1 or 2.0 features will not be available in a 1.0 player.

Well, maybe he does. Ars Technica ran an article today saying the Samsung BD-P1200 lawsuit was due to Profile incompatibility.

Are there any references? An official document? Heck, even a link to paidgeek's previous statements. If Ars is to correct their error (or just shut up about the Profile thing ), they need to be provided with something official. That is why I asked.

Here's a link to their story.

That article is just plain wrong. It has nothing to do with profiles....issues with the player came up most prominently with FF:ROSS and Day after Tomorrow, neither of which are profile 1.1 (IIRC). The problem with the BD-P1200(or one of them, anyway--at least the one this guy is suing over) is that it doesn't seem to like titles using the BD+ copy protection scheme. I don't know if this is the case, but certainly profiles are not the issue.

Those are two completely different issues. The lawsuit has nothing to do with profiles...

Thats the problem with so-called online "journalism" these days. There is no fact checking. And there is no distinction between real news articles and personal blogs anymore.

BD+, 1.1, and 2.0 titles are designed to work in all players. I believe paidgeek has stated this many times. But if he wants to dig up some official doc to shut these people up that would be good too.
As much as you might want to shut them up, the problem is still there, the player has many issues with many movies? So what would you do about it, i mean i doubt samsung will refund the money. What else can they resort to? It's pretty sad to see that this is happening.

Welcome back Paid for a second there i thought you were taking a definety leave of adcense.
