No, it's not.
As soon as you run it through a camera it loses quite a bit of resolution. Even the best emulsions, using the best anamorphic lenses eke out roughly 4K at best - AT BEST. Super35 is lower despite the additional soundtrack area. Despite Nolan-type propaganda pictures. |

But yeah, is either anywhere close to 6K once it actually ends up on the emulsion? Nope, because the stock and the lighting and the glass and the exposure and the development all affect the final resolution, plus any fast camera movement which kills temporal resolution @ 24fps. And given Nolan's undying love for film, even he would surely acknowledge that the printing steps needed to actually render that negative out to a suitable projection element also impact the resolution quite heavily, knocking off 20-25% with every step. Heck, even if we're talking about a 35mm showprint minted off the negative, and even if it was 6K at source, that print would be 4.5K. |

So when I see a 70mm film and it looks amazing, and then a crappy DCP- my eyes are lying to me? (I have yet to see a DCP that doesn't look terrible. And I have seen them at the Egyptian, Cineramadome, and at Eastman Kodak) I don't believe that my eyes are being fed propaganda when I see 35mm and 70mm film prints. |
