I've seen 4 movies now in IMAX 12 channel and all of them have sounded VERY good. Very well balanced, great bass and fantastic sense of immersion from all around.
my problem with the IMAX 12-channel sound is that the mixes tend to be very front heavy (and loud) thus masking many of the ceiling sound sourcing. I heard 'Mission Impossible Rogue Nation' and 'Everest' in both audio formats and Atmos was by far the superior mix.

I've seen Ant Man, Crimson Peak, Star Wars and Deadpool. Crimson Peak was a bit hit or miss in terms of surrounds immersion, but the rest sounded fantastic and very well balanced. Last night I saw 12 Cloverfield Lane in Atmos at the Seattle Cinerama and it was one of the better Atmos mixes I've heard in terms of immersion (clear overhead activity). Really fun film too. None of these sound as good as my home Atmos setup though

that's annoying re: Cloverfield Lane - I have not been able to trek over to my Arclight theater to hear it as such - oh well, guess I'll have to wait for the bluray to hear it. 'Crimson's Peak's 7.1 mix in the standard theater set up was very evocative. Since both IMAX-laser system's are at the Smithsonian, they don't book R-rated movies, so Peak was a no-go.

Nearly every mix I have head in atmos has been a real show of people not knowing what to do with the tech yet.
When people know tho, its stunning stuff but it's one in like 15 films

Star Wars - The Force Awaken's was sonically a letdown in both Atmos AND 12-channel.

I tried for Steed’s sake, but I recall there were none in the nature footage. One thing I think that any presenter at HPA retreat (be it Michael or anyone else), could profit from is to have Morgan Freeman do some of the narration of the videos as he can nail it no matter what the capability or quality of the camera….

Hopefully bloggers in general will pick up on it much sooner than they discovered the existence of ST 2084 so that some of the rampant HDR speculative science on the net will be rectified.

As to the recent compressionists’ meeting in San Diego (La Jolla), it was somewhat of an annoyance to deal with all the late revisions to submissions and there were actually a lot of officially late contributions which missed the early deadline.

Sorry for interrupting the current discussion (theatrical audio offerings, etc.), just had to contribute a bit while I had the chance before signing off for the day as I’m pretty busy this afternoon . Carry on folks.

I've had a similar experience except substitute Everest with The Force Awakens. The IMAX operators around here seem to think it's best to crank it to the max, which is painfully loud and distorted.

The blacks seemed better in DV as well, 4K DV laser projectors vs. 4K IMAX Laser. There also seemed to be a bit of picture cropping to make the 2.40 films "bigger" on the IMAX where the DV looked OAR.

To call "The Force Awakens" loud would be an understatement - the prior IMAX engagement where the volume was unacceptably loud was the last Transformers movie - I had to put my hands over my ears something I rarely do

On the subject of Dolby Cinema - AMC Tysons newly renovated auditorium will definitely be up for the upcoming Captain America movie but I'm hoping it could open early for "The Jungle Book"

At least you guys had a projectionist. Two of the IMAX screenings for FA I went to just left the volume at whatever the "laser alignment" nonsense sets it at, and it was so low you couldn't make out what Sydow was saying in the opening scene.

Theater's either setting volume way too low or way too high is one of the reasons I don't care to go out to them much anymore.

I heard this on in Atmos at two different theaters. The first was the first time I saw it and I was completely let down. The second time I saw it at the Cinerama in Seattle and it sounded fantastic. That theater is definitely one of the best I've ever been to, their picture and sound is just fantastic. I then saw it in Auro at a newer theater in the area and it sounded good, but not as good as in Atmos at the Cinerama. Then I saw it in IMAX and it was pretty close to the Cinerama's Atmos presentation. The IMAX here in Seattle is a new install with the laser projectors and new 12 channel sound system. I think Deadpool may have sounded a bit better at the IMAX than Star Wars did though.

Saw TFA in Atmos and it was my first Atmos experience, the Dolby demo before the film sounded great, the film itself, either the mix was very shy on overhead effects or it was just the theater.

They also advertise it in Atmos, which of course is better than the max IMAX 12 channel.
To be fair, The Jungle Book is all CG except for Mowgli, so it's not like it matters.

In the case of the later, it would do well, especially for children, to use protection.
