Is today the only day this month with UHD releases from the major distributors? I recall last year there were plenty of releases throughout the month.

Are we allowed to discuss Netflix's 4K movies/shows in this thread? Because they do have a lot of impressive stuff.

In fact, since the release of 'El Camino', I had been meaning to bring up that fact that the shortcoming of streaming encodes notwithstanding, that is without a doubt the single best example of 4K and HDR that I've seen for this format to date.

Holy cow did this movie look great. Maybe the most detailed looking movie I've ever seen (outside of one true IMAX film) along with Passengers, but this one had more vibrant colors so this might be the reference 4k release of all 4k releases. Perhaps only the true IMAX scenes scene on true IMAX film from one of the Batman films looked crisper (but with vastly more mundane colors). Even sitting close to a large 55 foot screen it still was almost like looking through a window and like you were really there crisp and very well lit and none of that nasty teal nonsense and really rich colors. Makes full use of 4k and wide gamut to say the least.

(and actually one of the best of these sorts of films I've seen story wise)

Fotokem just shared a link to a Post Magazine article talking about their work restoring Patton.

FotoKem has restored dozens of films, bringing deep film knowledge and a dedication to creative intent and aesthetic to digital preservation efforts. Most recently, 20th Century Fox asked the studio to restore the multi-Oscar winning Patton. The mandate was to create an SDR version and new 4K DCP, 4K HDR, 4K UHD and DSM (digital source master) versions for archives. To tackle this important project, FotoKem, working under the supervision of Schawn Belston, SVP of mastering at The Walt Disney Company, went back to the fiveperf 65mm original negative.

“Scans of the original negative result in an incredibly detailed, grain accurate file for HDR versioning, especially when scanned at 8K,” notes FotoKem’s Andrew Oran, SVP and GM of feature sales and marketing. Working from the five-perf 65mm camera negative, FotoKem scanned at 8K, archived raw 8K scans and then scaled to 4K for clean-up and color. “Our pipeline allowed us to make the new versions look as close to the original as possible.”

In order to do this, the team at FotoKem began with addressing flicker, dust, dirt and damage on the negative. Because the original film negative was textless, subtitles had to be skillfully added back in from scratch, to translate German dialogue to English for several scenes. The original duplicate negative used for printing was also digitized, to provide a frame-accurate reference for the duration and look of the recreated subtitles.

Additionally, a few old-school visual effects from the original version — such as string used to make things and animals move — were now apparent in the 8K scans. “With today’s improved viewing environments and scanning technology, there’s always a philosophical consideration to restoration work when it comes to ‘fixing’ what some may perceive as ‘imperfections’ in the new version,” notes Oran. “Keeping the original intentions of the filmmakers is always paramount in our work, and we consider it our job to discuss each and every one of these instances with the studio — or the filmmakers if they are available.” In the case of Patton, all strings were left untouched.

The HDR color pass also presented a new way to see the film. Clouds and details on metals were more visible, as well as details on walls and maps. HDR allowed FotoKem colorist Kostas Theodosiou to dig into the darks and highlights during the grading passes on a Resolve. “Because we have 70mm film and digital capabilities, I was able to view both versions in the same theater and match them very closely. That was critical in helping us to retain the authentic look,” adds Theodosiou.

“HDR is really a great restoration tool, as it improves the offset of foreground, midground and background, giving the movie an improved sense of depth,” Oran continues. “Having the original to match to new versions gave us the ultimate reference for maintaining the integrity of this classic movie.”

Like Disnee restoring 20k Leagues in 4K at a cost of millions like 7 years ago but only just releasing it on disc, and merely a DMC exclusive 1080p disc at that? Yeah sure I guess. You'll have to forgive my scepticism, I'm just not convinced that Foxney are going to change their stance with live action catalogue content on UHD if it's not part of some major franchise. Even major anniversaries weren't enough to get Fox re-releasing certain movies on BD this year, let alone on UHD.

That was internal silliness/insanity; this isn't. Sometimes it's easier to let the new acquisition's pipeline spit out its remnants than to grind everything to a halt and then find a new way to re-start the works.

But now that internal silliness/insanity is in charge of what Fox does, that's what scares me hoss.

So many great 70mm movies they could restore to their original brilliance. Starting with El Cid and Fall of The Roman Empire.

I know the US DVD release was through Weinstein's Miriam Collection - not even a bluray was released.

This isn't a 4k movie release.. But a YouTube release..

WHAM! Has just released a brand new 4k remaster of their hit Christmas song "Last Christmas", replacing their old 480p version they had. The results are quite stunning.

From what I've gathered, alot of music videos in the 80s were shot on video tape, this being a rare bird being shot on film.

Many people seem to agree on 1 thing, it looks so real at times that it almost appears to have been re-shot with new actors wearing fake 80s clothes

I did some screen shot comparisons. The bottom image though is "only" 1440p, so not even full 4k.

Enjoy!

Film was used more than you might think. (Same with porn ) I noticed that the video for Freedom (directed by David Fincher) had been remastered as well when that George Michael documentary appeared a while back.
