I can't decide which part is my favorite.
[Show spoiler]When Ian Holme is reading the first few lines of the book and Gandalf shows up and introduces himself or the moment Bilbo decides not to kill Gollum.

sadly it won't be. It's still going to be 1080p 24fps on blu ray.

I'm sort of in the same boat as you. It's not that I didn't care for it per se, it was just that it was so different and possessed no filmic qualities that we're all so used to seeing. I'm not going to knock the format quite yet as it was the first of it's kind so they're still testing the waters. I'm sure they'll improve on it and make future 48fps movies look more natural.

For you Christopher Lee fans.

http://bloody-disgusting.com/news/32...tal-christmas/

Horror legend Christopher Lee is 90-years old but that doesn’t stop him from being the dictionary definition of the word “badass”. On top of being in some of the greatest horror films of all time, Lee is also a trained singer. So what kind of music does a man of Lee’s stature release? Why, heavy metal of course! With the Charlemagne project, Lee has released two heavy metal albums (check out “The Bloody Verdict of Verden” below).

Now, Lee has released A Heavy Metal Christmas, which features heavy metal versions of the classic Christmas noels “The Little Drummer Boy” and “Silent Night”. You can hear audio samples below or you can snag the songs on iTunes

Those guys have a lot of energy. Similar to discussing things with the people I work with, it's always fun to listen to non-Tolkien fans talk about the films.

24fps translates into 120hz and watching BDs like I have on 240hz "especially" in Smooth Motion takes a while for the eyes to get used too. But I think thats why I was able to enjoy the 48fps without the distraction. 24fps will have to do and may look the same on 240hz home screens

I don't know much about home theater tech but could this have a blu release with the 48 fps? Something like:

HFR 3D/3D Blu/Blu/DVD/Digital Copy

That could be the "premier" version along with the standard Blu/DVD/ Digital Copy.

Thoughts? Even possible?

[Show spoiler] Thorin's for Boromir's death ala Fellowship?). I wonder if Jackson has in mind some kind of reconciliation between Thorin and Thranduil at the end? Despite the absurdity of the appearance of the elves in the prologue, I have to admit the guy who plays Thranduil is the most "elvish" looking character I've ever seen. In fact, I'm not convinced that he isn't an Elf.
He would have made a great Glorfindel.

I'm not savvy on the technical details but as far as I know the blu ray format is incapable of outputting 48fps in 1080p. Even if it could I'd think the doubling of the amount of data (twice as many frames) would render 3D HFR on current blu rays impractical, especially with a movie as long as the hobbit.

That was also my thought, and if they would have placed some more characters like him at
[Show spoiler] the White Council (along with some meaningful dialog), it would have given more validity to that scene and bumped the quality of the movie up a notch. I'm anxious to see if the excellent choice of Elvish characters continues in the next film when we see the Elvenking's realm in Mirkwood. I'm still not sure what Boyens is referring to regarding the back story of "Tauriel", but it looks like we'll have to wait another year to find out what that is all about. At least we have an idea of what to expect the Elvish army to look like in the third film, which the art, costume, and make-up departments have done a superb job with, as they did in the Fellowship prologue. I also thought the wargs were more "warg-like" in this movie than their counterparts in The Two Towers.

As for the orcs, I thought their appearance was superior to most of the orcs portrayed in the LotR films, although there were also some stand-outs in those films, for example the Uruk-hai and the mean-looking task-master fellow in Mordor (Return of the King EE) that singles out Frodo and Sam (dressed like orcs) from the rest of the pack. The Great Goblin was inventive and OK, but a little over the top. Also, I thought the language used by the orcs in this film was more advanced (and a scribe?) than one would expect. From the Appendices:

"It is said that they [Orcs] had no language of their own, but took what they could of other tongues and perverted it to their own liking; yet they made only brutal jargons, scarcely sufficient even for their own needs, unless it were for curses and abuse."

But, maybe I'm being too picky.

@radagast: Did you like the hobbit? What's your rating out of 10? Just curious.

Isn't it strange that the Frodo/Old Bilbo footage ends around the time the main narrative for FOTR begins? Wouldn't it have been more fitting for Part 3?

I have only seen the movie once and the scene you refer to was rather brief, but I believe that
[Show spoiler] Radagast was attacked by the Witch-king, and I also believe there was a quick glance of Sauron immediately before Radagast fled. In the actual (text) story, there is no account that I can recall of the Witch-king being at Dol Guldur anywhere near this period. After his forces were defeated at Fornost Erain, he fled to Mordor where he was in charge while Sauron was taking form at Dol Guldur. I believe that Jackson is using the W.K. here to maintain continuity with the LotR movies. Also, according to Unfinished Tales, Khamul, the Nazgul next in rank to the W.K., was in charge of Dol Guldur in the absence of Sauron.

oh that's very helpful thanks - guess I should catch up on the Unfinished Tales book now.
