CNN'S The 10 worst movies of 2012

1. 'The Hobbit'

Whatever you think of the film itself (and with at least one-third of the running time given over to padding, it's pretty indefensible), hands-down the worst experience at the movies this year was suffering the plastic high-definition 48 frames-per-second 3-D version of Peter Jackson's box-office smash. The technology made one of the most expensive movies ever made look like a PS3 game.

I can see if some people were disapointed with the Hobbit, if they didn't like it, but to call it the worst film of 2012, really?

The worst in terms of terrible story, terrible acting, terrible filmaking on a technical aspect? There is just no way, and 2012 would be one of the best years ever if Hobbit was the worst it had to offer.

Perfect example of hyperbole.

Agreed. To me, that's just there for page hits. There is no way that 'The Hobbit: An Unexpected Journey' is the worst film of the year. That's just over the top.

Ridiculous. CNN should be ashamed of themselves for this kind of tripe. This smacks of "Let's bash something lots of people like because it's cool to be contrarion."

So it's the worst of the year because you didn't like a completely optional viewing format that most audiences would have had to go out of their way to see it in?

You are correct. Tom Charity is entitled to his "opinion", but it is a completely unfounded one. To say that The Hobbit is the worst film of 2012 is disingenuous at best and is completely laughable. In his review, he even starts by saying, "Whatever you think of the film itself...". He is admitting that it is his experience with the HFR and not the film that was terrible, and yet the title of the article is The Worst Movies of 2012. I could name 20 films made this year that were worse than The Hobbit.

That's all well and good, but he doesn't call it the worst of 2012 because of his opinion of the actual film (which would be his perfectly fine), but because he hated 48fps.

That's like if I gave The Avengers, or some other film, a thumbs down because I hate 3D conversions. It makes absolutely no sense.

He compares The Hobbits to an episode of the Teletubbies. Seriously? Come on. Throughout the entire review he criticizes mainly the technology and admits he hadn't seen it at 24 fps. The majority of the review is a critique of the technology, not the artistic merit of the film or the story.

There are seven paragraphs of critique before he mentions the HFR.

The worst of 2012?!I must have missed that year,or slipped into an alternate reality because I seem to remember worse movies than the Hobbit-even if one is critical. In CNN's reality,2012 must have been the best year ever of movieproduction then

He is entitled of his opinion, but so are we-aren't we?...
To me,that statement of Hobbit being the worst of 2012 is like saying Martin Scorcese is a mediocre director:You are entitled to that opinion, but doesn't excactly raise your credibility

I gave it 4 stars but it was more like 3.5 i feel.

+ Freemans Bilbo
+ Gollum scenes
+ Music
+ Thought the intro scene with dale / erebor was awesome.
+ Richard Armitage as Thorin

- Alot of the humor fell flat for me.
- CGI over used as others have mentioned.
- Radagast scenes, think they went over the top with his quirkyness.

I actually didnt find the first hour boring or slow.

Yea they sure did. And it is almost a ROTTEN score which is ABSURD!

However....what's that little rating on the right side of the picture there?

It has become very apparent that the critics are largely just basing their scores on a type of format that they cannot wrap their brains around yet.

Everyone's entitled to an opinion, but this is ridiculous. My idea of "padding" is Jackson's invented material, which may be inadvisable - but not "indefensible". But from the perspective of simply being a movie, The Hobbit was undoubtedly one of the BEST films of the year. If the 48 fps issue was a big deal, he had other options to see the movie in 24 fps or generic 24 fps 3D. This guy should not be reviewing movies.
