Yeah. I truly can't remember the last time I felt like that. I really expected to come out of the theater thinking, "It was interesting, but not something I would be looking forward to." I mean I hate the Trumotion settings on modern TV's. I dislike the look of video. But, it was really amazing how it converted me. I think it gives 3D new life. That's not to say I want all 3D 48FPS films in the future, but I think it could be a new film art medium and immersion tool to get people back to the theaters. I can't imagine what a hyper-realistic movie, with a incredible cinematographer would look like in 48FPS 3D. Zero Dark Thirty?

Like for instance...
[Show spoiler]I can't really stand the way Radagast is portrayed. Elrond tells Gandalf at Rivendell that he is answerable to others. Gandalf immediately turns and sees Galadriel. Rubbish. Gandalf is not answerable to any elf. Saruman maybe. Radagast fights a ringwraith at Dol Guldur, right? Was it the Witch-King? If so WTH? Gandalf the White can't beat the Witch-King in the EE version on ROTK, but Ragagast can? More rubbish. I am going to wait until the entire triliogy is out on Blu-ray to buy this.
Ahhh what?

[Show spoiler]Radagast ran away from a ring wraith.. he didn't fight it at all.

Yea, I mentioned this earlier, but I very rarely go to movie theaters anymore at all since I have a modest HD home theater(probably 1 movie every 3 or 4 years) However, if they start making most action, fantasy, super hero, and sci-fi films in this format, I will most definitely try to get my ass back in the theater on a regular bases.

I was on the fence regarding 3D, however I am fully on board if with this HFR tech.

I just got back from seeing it in HFR 3D. What an amazing way to watch a film. It was also on an extra-large screen. It took a little while for me to get fully immersed: 5 minutes to get used to it and about an hour to fully appreciate how amazing and natural it really looks. The look of the film constantly blew me away in how close I felt to the action and how immersed I was in the scenery. I absolutely loved watching it this way. I was a bit worried at first because I already saw it twice in 2D 24fps (none of my friends wanted to go for the new experience). It really was like watching a completely different movie this time around. I was really happy that when I saw it in 2D, I didn't notice anything that felt off due to the way it was filmed, but watching it this new way showed me just how wrong I was. There is so much more information to take in at 48fps! I think I am going to have to get another friend in on it. While The Hobbit film doesn't quite reach the same level as the film I have as my theater record (The Avengers 4x), the experience of HFR might push me there.

It makes me a bit sad that so many people are trying to destroy the format and taking the movie down with their destruction. I really like the idea of having many different formats to see a movie. I said this before experiencing HFR and I would have stuck to it even if I really disliked it. Makes me wonder why people must destroy what they personally do not like.

Agreed.

So question, is the 48fps only shown in 3D? Is this format intended for 2D showings as well or does it somehow compliment 3D specifically?

I have a Q for the tech savvy here...

one of my friends with whom I went to see this film said he found the action scenes to hard to follow and blurry. I had a similar problem.

We watched 3D at 24 fps.

Would this be due to the new 48 fps photography? Meaning, was it shot to look great in 48 fps (clear and non blurry) but by reducing it down to 24 fps it became blurry?

Also, did any others have trouble understanding Gollum's riddles? (meaning could not understand what he was saying). I sure did.

Also, both my friends felt the 3D was underwhelming... and said they would rather watch it in 2D. (they are not 3D haters).

I felt it was simply very subtle, probably intentional..?

Would appreciate others thoughts on this.

I felt midway through the movie that I ought to have seen it in proper 2D 24fps.The 3D was nothing special to me,and it is abit of a hassle to wear those glasses for near 3 hours. Can't wait for the 2D BD though.

They really need to ditch the glasses thing. What a nuisance. I dont do 3D and this is one of the big reasons.

Looking forward to this coming out on blu-ray seeing as I dont do theaters anymore.

Yes. Only 3D for now.

The reason being is the 3D projectors that they are using have the newer digital tech so it is far easier to update them to show off the HFR. They will eventually get around to the regular 2D projectors, but it will be quite a while before they do as they STILL have a whole lot of 3D ones yet to upgrade.

Also the HRF is supposed to help with the 3D eye strain as well which is another reason they chose them first.

.

I only saw it in 48-FPS 3D and thought that it was absolutely phenomenal. And after a few minutes I completely forget that I was even wearing glasses at all.

I haven't checked out the regular 3D and I have no reason to as I much prefer the 48-HFR instead.

Thanks Radagast, maybe I just adjusted really quick to it, I dunno, I thought it looked amazing. I just expected it to be crazy different from all of the crap I've been hearing about it, and I just didn't experience it. Maybe I would notice a difference if I went to see it in 2D???

And yes, I know I was at the right theater... I've been to the IMAX in Noblesville quite it bit, its my fav theater around here

I saw The Hobbit at Showplace 17, south side of Indy, saw it in IMAX 3D, I thought it was great! As most people have said, some of the battles were a bit blurry and probably would have looked better at 48 fps, I'm hoping to go up to Noblesville soon to see it at HFR! I did take my glasses off a few times just to see the true colors of the film and I was very impressed with what it will look like on BD! I hope 3D glasses will eventually allow us to see the true colors of the films rather than tinting them down! Overall, I loved The Hobbit and I'm looking forward to owning it on BD!

I can only see it in 24fps since that is only what is available to me. I would like to see it in 48fps just to see the difference.

Sigh.

I agree with you. Many of the action scenes were too fast to follow, and I thought the 3D was okay, but underwhelming.

The first two times I watched the film, I saw it in 24fps 2D and specifically looked for anything that might look off due to the way it was shot. I didn't notice a single thing that looked off to me. However, watching in 48fps 3D, I was able to take in a whole lot more information in the battle scenes and everything looked much clearer. There was no blur. The slow motion battles looked amazing. In short, I don't think shooting in 48fps caused anything to be any blurrier in 24fps presentation. But that is a casual observer's opinion.

I wouldn't say it was underwhelming as much as pretty subtle. As much as I like the 'in your face' shots, I am perfectly happy just being immersed and forgetting to look for the 3D. There was only one part that really reminded me of the 3D: When Gollum realizes Bilbo has his ring, there is an extreme close-up of his face and it comes off the screen. It was intense.

Sorry, JB. I think you would really enjoy it too. Hopefully with news of more movies being shot this way will lead your theaters into updating.
